    Lower Normandy - France

In the North West of France, Lower Normandy juts out into the sea and is bordered by the English Channel on its North and West coasts. The name "Normandy" is derived from the Viking Norsemen who invaded France, sailing up the river Seine in the 9th century. It is a delightful region and has many similarities to the English countryside with hedgerows, apple orchards and meadows aplenty. Lower Normandy benefits from fertile land providing plenty of delicious agricultural products and the surrounding sea generously supplies a variety of seafood. The dairy products are also excellent and some of the best cheese in france can be found here. The parc regional de Normandie (Normandy regional park) covers a whopping 262,248 hectares of land and is great for walking canoeing or climbing. Lower Normandy is home to some great towns such as Deauville, a popular destination for wealthy Parisiens which hosts its annual film festival in September and the stunning Mont St Michel, a small, rocky, tidal island approximately 1km off of mainland france with a fabulous monastery dating back to the 8th century AD. Whatever your interests there is something for you in Lower Normandy.
