Popular and cosmopolitan, the 20th arrondissement of Paris surprises visitors by its picturesque and provincial side. Created during the Second Empire by the regrouping of part of the former commune of Belleville, almost all of the former commune of Charonne and a small part of the commune of Saint-Mandé, it also offers quite different atmospheres. The most visited site in the borough is a cemetery, the highly famous Père-Lachaise cemetery. It must be said that the place does not lack charm with its 5000 trees and its baroque and sometimes grandiloquent graves. To see absolutely : the mausoleum of Héloïse and Abélard, the wall of the federates, the monument dedicated to the resistance fighters and deportees of the Second World War and the last resting place of many illustrious figures: Balzac, Chopin, Jim Morrison...
North of the cemetery, visit the Ménilmontant and Belleville neighbourhoods. Former hamlet of the village of Belleville, Ménilmontant used to host vineyards, bistros and guinguettes. From that time, it has kept its popular side with its warm cafes and small friendly restaurants. Nearby, Belleville has the same popular charm. Sometimes nicknamed "Babelville", for the cosmopolitan character of its population, the district is full of small winding and sloping streets at the top of which the view on Paris is often incredible. This is notably the case for the rue de Belleville, the rue des Envierges or the rue des Cascades. In addition, these small streets are often lined with cafés and restaurants with welcoming terraces.
South of the Père-Lachaise cemetery, the Charonne district will undoubtedly give you the impression of being in the provinces. With its many pedestrian streets, its charming houses with small gardens, its countless staircases, it looks like a peaceful country village. In the centre of the district, Saint-Blaise Street, undulating and lined with beautiful residences, perfectly sums up this atmosphere. At the beginning of the street, Saint-Germain-de-Charonne church has an imposing 13th century bell tower and protects a small cemetery offering a very beautiful panoramic view over the surroundings. To eat or to have a drink, you will find many tempting and convivial addresses like the Golden Helmet, Lou Tiap or the Red Quarter.
