Perched at 1860 meters above sea level in the heart of the Massif des Grandes Rousses, the resort of Alpe d'Huez awaits you all year round for a muscular holiday ! This peaceful village dates back to the Middle Ages and converted to Early 20th century in world-famous ski and summer resort.
The emergence of the ski resort dates back to the 1920s and was the starting point for the metamorphosis of the town into a major tourist destination of the French Alps. Its ski area overlooks the valleys of the Oisans, offering magnificent panoramas to the skiers. It also benefits from a very good sunshine which makes the Alpe d'Huez a commune where it is good to live no matter the season. Finally, it puts at the disposal of the lovers of the slide more than 130 tracks of all levels. One of the most famous, the Sarenne, is considered one of the longest tracks in Europe. Rather, it is recommended for experienced skiers, and its descent of about 16 kilometers would last more than an hour. Another well-known track of the resort, the Tunnel is only accessible to skiers unrivaled in search of thrills.
The main attraction of the municipality, sport is also in the spotlight during the summer. The Sports and Convention Center offers more than thirty sports activities to suit all tastes. On the program : badminton, basketball, aquagym, archery, swimming, climbing, bodybuilding, fitness... Enjoy the pure mountain air at the equestrian center or on the resort's golf courses. In summer, the Alpe d'Huez becomes a reference point for many sporting events. To name but a few, the Megavalanche, an internationally renowned mountain bike event, has been taking place every year since 1995. It is a marathon descent of the Sarenne glacier, which includes many cyclists of different nationalities.
The village of Alpe d'Huez is proud of its centuries-old history. The Museum of Huez and the Oisans makes it possible to discover its origins through the narratives of the miners who created the village, known at the time under the name of Brandes, in order to exploit the silver mine. After this visit, it is imperative to go to the archaeological site of Brandes to discover the remains of this medieval village, the highest in Europe.
