It is in the middle of the Avesnois Natural Park that the "green resort" of Eppe Sauvage is located. Located in the North, on the edge of the Lake of Val Joly extending on more than 180 hectares, it is the ideal destination for family stays.
Start your stay with a visit to the village of Eppe-Sauvage : its Saint-Ursmer church, listed as a Historic Monument, is worth a visit : its red bricks and blue interior walls are typical of 16th century local buildings. A little further on, around the village, you will have the opportunity to cross the path of several buildings with a medieval past, such as the splendid Château de Williers (also called Château de Caroix), or Château Maillard, made of red bricks and slate.
A paradise for green tourism, hiking and cycling, the Avesnois region is also known as "La Petite Normandie du Nord". In the middle of a mosaic of landscapes including wooded meadows, flowering orchards, rivers and forests with abundant vegetation, the commune of Eppe Sauvage stands out, in particular thanks to its resort of ValJoly. Recognized "Green Station" since 2010, ValJoly enjoys a national reputation among summer visitors. Lovers of outdoor activities, in a preserved setting ? You've come to the right place! This tourist resort nestled by a lake is the ideal place to recharge your batteries, with family or friends, in the heart of abundant nature. On the sporting side, young and old can choose from a wide range of activities : horseback riding, minigolf, kart, adventure course, archery, laser tag and even Nordic walking by the lake. Mountain bikers will be able to discover the fauna and flora bordering the lake by taking one of the 6 marked out circuits at the start of the resort, through the forests of Avesnois and the surroundings of Eppe Sauvage. The "Les Roquettes" circuit, 3.5 kilometres long, will be ideal for family excursions when the "Grande boucle" and "Clocher inclché" circuits, 45 and 30 kilometres respectively, will suit the most experienced cyclists. You can also ride horses, scooters and electric skateboards : fun, original and ecological ways to discover Eppe Sauvage's green and wooded nature. There is an aquatic centre at the resort, ideal for swimming, aquabike and aquagym fans. The lake will lend itself to long afternoons dedicated to the practice of nautical activities such as sailing, pedal boat, fishing, catamaran or stand-up paddle. Walks on the lake aboard small boats, canoes or kayaks are also to be made, to discover with family or friends the beauty of its banks.
For a visit of the region and Belgium nearby, Eppe Sauvage is the ideal place to settle down. Only 20 kilometres from there, once the border is crossed, is the town of Chimay. This Belgian commune located at the gates of the Thiérache and the Avesnois deserves a visit : but if its picturesque streets and medieval buildings are worthy of interest, it is above all for its gastronomic heritage that we recommend a visit. You will absolutely have to taste the "Chimay", this beer brewed in the enclosure of a Trappist monastery which makes the fame of the commune.
As for gastronomy, one thing is certain : you will remember your visit to the Eppe Sauvage region. The local cuisine is generous, perfumed and very rich : in addition to beer, the inevitable Maroilles invites itself to all the good tables in the form of pie or dessert, just like the dumpling of Avesnes, the flamiche, the fricadelle, the beer soup and the sugar pie which will conquer all the greedy.

Too bad that at the beginning of September almost everything is closed totally or partially even at the level of visits to the outside.... September is another tourist month for retired people, for example, since many of them often go out of season. The MusVerre (glass museum located in Sars) is to be enhanced.

The catering at Le Valjoly is excellent, the shopkeepers are nice and the prices are very correct. The ladies who make blown glass objects are very talented and welcoming.
