The island of Oléron is home to an exceptional place that has preserved intact its charm despite the onslaught of time. It is Saint-Georges d'Oléron, a town located in the department of Charente-Maritime. All the ingredients that make the success of the South West of France come together in this picturesque destination : sea air, culinary traditions based on the work of seafood, natural landscapes preserved and a strong identity.
Witness the past, the lighthouse of Chassiron, perched on its rocky spur, is the starting point of our beautiful escape. This building, built in 1834, is easily recognizable by the large black and white bands that adorn its rounded sides. The rotunda of the lighthouse now houses a museum composed of six rooms. The exhibits give pride of place to the maritime history of this remarkable site.
The commune of Saint-Georges d'Oléron is the largest of the whole island. It covers more than 4700 ha and has more than 16 km of beach. It is therefore logical enough, in this locality, to organize most of the events : treasure hunt during which you can follow the track of the Secret of the Goutte d'Or, concerts of classical music, equestrian shows...
Offshore, one sees the famous Fort Boyard accessible by the boat. Cultural visits are not lacking in the region. You will have the opportunity to visit the distillery of eau de vie of cognac or the Farm with Donkeys. Near the old hall of the 19th century stands two immense buildings : the Château Fournier and the Château Briquet. These opulent residences remind us of the presence of many families who made a fortune thanks to the exploitation of vines or fishing. Outside the village, one can also visit several hamlets attached to Saint-Georges d'Oléron, including Boyardville, Sauzelle, Les Sables Vignier or Domino.

Bicycles, walks, beaches... There is a lack of bars, restaurants and shops in St Georges. La Cotinière is more attractive (town centre and port).

I recommend the restaurant "Le Relais des Salines" in Grand Village, fisherman's hut, excellent table, beautiful environment, view of the marshes. And of course: the seafood restaurant "La Roue Tourne", the livewells of the Saurine (Boyardville road), for the table but especially for the atmosphere.

A good, cheap restaurant: La Marina" in Boyardville. Activities: the Chassiron lighthouse (attention 224 steps), Fort boyar by catamaran, visit of the Port des Salines + boat trip. Remember to get a pass: it gives you discounts on your visits. We had our own at the Chassiron Lighthouse.

It is absolutely necessary to do the little train of Saint Trojan. The stationmaster sets the mood with a sense of humour. Not to be missed also: the small port, the beach and the small shops at La Cotinière.
