South of Valencia, 73 kilometres from Alicante, Benissa surprises by the contrast of its landscapes. Between sea and mountains, the old city shelters old monuments and numerous restaurants which will make you discover all the richnesses of the local culture.
On the Costa Blanca, Benissa has a steep coastline with beautiful fine sandy beaches and small coves sheltered by pines. Its clear waters and wonderful seabed make it a favourite place for diving. To appreciate the richness of the underwater fauna and flora, six courses have been specially designed. But many other water activities await you like paddle, kayaking, surfing or sailing. And, to introduce you to all these sports, the nautical club Les Bassettes (Port Esportiu) proposes you courses of all levels.
A city with a rich past, Benissa invites you to explore its medieval historical centre, one of the best preserved in the province of Alicante. As you walk along its alleys and old squares, you can admire many buildings that have survived the centuries. Enjoy the Council Chamber, a former town hall built in the 16th century, the site of the University and the present town hall, which was a municipal hospital when it was built in 1790. Discover also the Place de la Vieille Église which housed the fortress-church and the Calle Desemparats lined with rich houses including that of Abargues, an 18th century mansion house converted into a museum presenting original furniture and earthenware. Finally, finish your heritage walk by visiting the Franciscan Fathers' convent (4 centuries old and restored in the early 90s) and the imposing neo-Gothic church of Puríssima Xiqueta.
With its fabulous environment, Benissa also offers many opportunities for walks in nature. Take, for example, the Ecological Walk, which runs along the coast and is dotted with information panels on the local culture, botanical and geological wealth. To discover the hinterland, follow the Hermitage Route or the hiking trails that cross the Sierra de Oltà, the Sierra de Bèrnia or the Sierra de la Solana. After a busy day, treat yourself to a gourmet break to enjoy all the flavors of regional specialties: Borreta de melva, Mullador de pelleta, Putxero de polp, Arròs de senyoret...
