Situated on the famous Costa Dorada, Tarragona, nowadays a radiant tourist spot, has sheltered many populations, because the geographical situation of this Catalan province has given it a strategic role in the history of the Iberian peninsula. That its capital of the same name was founded by an Aegean people towards the 2nd millennium BC What is certain is that the city of Tarragona was marked by the Iberian and Roman conquests.
Formerly known as "Tarraco" by the Romans, it rapidly became the capital of the "Tarraconese" region, a gigantic Roman province that covered most of the Iberian peninsula at the time. Today, the archaeological site of Tárraco exposes the vestiges of this commercial and administrative city of great scale. Registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2000, you will find on this site the wonders of ancient and medieval architecture. Roman theater, Visigoth basilica, Scipio tower, Roman walls... Numerous buildings have been beautifully preserved in order to recall the origins of this historic province. The Tarragona capital is also 15 kilometers of coastline punctuated by beaches and small coves bathed by the Mediterranean. Nature lovers will appreciate its golden coasts on which are located two natural protected areas : the Plan of Spaces of Natural Interest of the Punta de la Móra, sanctuary of several plant species, and the natural area of the mouth of the River Gaià, home to over 80 species of birds.
Fans of thrills, do not miss the largest amusement park in Spain ! The famous PortVentura is divided into six thematic zones that will take you through the world : the Mediterranean, Polynesia, China, Mexico, Far West and a dedicated section (for the youngest) for adventure and entertainment ("SésamoAventura"). Each area contains three to eleven attractions as well as shows related to the main themes. With family or friends, a good dose of adrenaline awaits you in this cosmopolitan park.
On the culture side, art lovers will not be left behind. Indeed, the province of Tarragona was, in the last century, a real nest of artists from Catalan modernism. In particular : the ancient medieval village of Reus which was the birthplace of Gaudí, famous grand master of the artistic movement. Although he did not realize any architecture in Reus, the city dedicated to him the "Gaudí Center" in order to make live the genius of the artist through a set of audiovisual and tactile structures. In addition to Gaudí, Reus presents the works of other Catalan modernist artists. In particular : the architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner, contemporary of Gaudí, who was at the origin of Casa Navás. This building at the corner of Plaça del Mercadal has experienced no changes since its construction between 1901 and 1908, unlike many other modernist works.
