Fascinating : if he is an adjective that alone is enough to describe Finland, here he is... And it suits him perfectly. How not to fall under the spell of its forests, its lighthouses, its inhabitants, its lakes as far as the eye can see, its rivers, its northern lights, its authentic cities and its landscapes as magical and breathtaking beauty ?
Surrounded by the Baltic Sea and thousands of small, unspoilt islands, Finland has many kilometres of coastline and a wealth of unsuspected treasures. Finland is also called the "Land of the Midnight Sun" because in summer, in the northernmost regions of the country, the sun does not set for even a few moments. In winter, on the other hand, the sun tends to disappear almost completely without giving way completely to the night : the moon, the stars, the bright snow and the northern lights bring light and a magical touch to sleeping landscapes tinged with blue, purple and violet. Finland is more an ode to nature, to a change of scenery and to wonder than it is to be visited. From Helsinki to the wonderful Lapland via Tampere the Bohemian, Hamina, Kuopio and the Northern Savony, Kouvola, Porvoo and its wooden buildings and the majestic Turku, you will vibrate to the rhythm of its pure and energetic landscapes, where nature is omnipresent.
Helsinki is a vibrant coastal city with large green spaces and beautiful islands, and is both dynamic and relaxed. Famous for its design district, Helsinki is well worth a visit. Let yourself be carried away by its positive energy and walk through its pretty streets, and climb to the top of the Torni Hotel for a panoramic view of the city. Sit down in its cafés (here coffee is almost a religion !), visit its Art Museum, the Old Market Hall, the National Museum of Finland, the Kampii Chapel (also called the Chapel of Silence), the Uspenski Cathedral and Temppeliaukio Church. Go to the splendid Söderskär lighthouse, stroll through the wooden districts of Käpylä and Vallila, do some shopping on Aleksanterinkatu street, take a wellness break in a sauna (there are more than 3 million in Finland, or one for two inhabitants) or in the swimming pool on Yrjönkatu street and stroll at sunset along the waterfront to enjoy beautiful, soft and colourful landscapes. Take advantage of your visit to Helsinki to discover one of Finland's seven UNESCO World Heritage sites : the fortified island of Suomenlinna. Located at about fifteen minutes from the Finnish capital by boat, this island with military architecture (made up in reality of 6 small islands) made of a fortress and dungeons is a place of walk very appreciated by the helsinkiens.
More than 70% of the country being covered by forest, many cities were once built of wood. The cities of Porvoo, Loviisa, Kokkola, Turku, Oulu and Rauma are worth a visit, as are some of the Helsinki districts mentioned above, thanks to their wooden constructions, each more colourful and charming than the next.
40: the number of national parks you may have the opportunity to visit in Finland. From Nuuksio National Park (45 minutes from Helsinki) to the Archipelago and Oulanka, not forgetting the sumptuous Teijo Park with its peaceful forests and the Koli Park, the breathtaking natural landscapes follow one another but are not alike. Divided between the valleys of Lapland, the wooded regions of the central-eastern part of the country and the islands of the archipelago, these parks are the scene of many excursions, summer and winter. In winter, the weather is ideal for activities such as cross-country skiing in the light of the northern lights on the Kilpisjärvi side, snowshoeing or snowmobiling, and dog sledding in Lapland. In summer, there are "green" hikes, trekking and discovery of the local flora. In terms of wildlife, it is not uncommon to encounter bears, particularly in the Taiga, as well as reindeer, elk, wolves, lynx and many species of birds and fish in the country's 188,000 lakes (most of which are located in the Great Lakes region).
An unforgettable spectacle, the Northern Lights are among the most beautiful celestial events to be observed with the naked eye. 200 nights a year, in the heart of Finnish Lapland, you will be able to observe bright colours gushing in the clear sky : sometimes blue, green, pink and yellow, these luminous events are Finland's legend. Observation sites have been set up in Rovaniemi, Muonio and Kemi in particular.
For beautiful pictures, go to Lohja to immortalize the Paavolan oak, and head towards the Kiiku spring.
