Watered in its south by the meanders of the Dordogne river, Carsac-Aillac is located in the heart of the New Aquitaine region, in the Dordogne department. Close to Sarlat-la-Canéda and a whole host of exciting historical sites, this pretty detour is the perfect place to pack your bags for a cultural holiday.
In the Périgord, Carsac-Aillac is one of those destinations impossible to forget. A change of scenery, this commune bordered by the Dordogne and the Énéa is a must for all holidaymakers who love heritage. After having taken the time to visit the heart of the village, head for the Pech-de-l'Azé caves: a prehistoric site of five caves dating back to the Musterian of Acheulean tradition, these dens are known to have yielded an impressive skull fossil dating back to the Neanderthal period. Not far away, the cave of Roc de Combe (in Payrignac), but also the caves of Cougnac, those of Maxange, Bara-Bahau, the cave of Font-de-Gaume and its prehistoric paintings, the cave of the Sorcerer, that of Pech Blanc, the marvellous cave of Rouffignac and that of Proumeyssac are added to the list of the visits to be made. But if you had to choose only one in the region, it would obviously be the one in Lascaux. Located about 30 minutes north of Carsac-Aillac, the Lascaux II cave is a must see during your stay. Situated in the commune of Montignac, in the Vézère valley, it is one of the most important decorated caves of the Palaeolithic, known for its magnificent works in great number.
Carsac-Aillac, in addition to being a paradise for history lovers, will delight lovers of beautiful heritage and old stones. Also, in its area, there are many manor houses and other absolutely splendid castles that you will be able to discover during hiking or cycling outings. If the castle of Commarque (12th century) is a must in the region, the castle of Milandes, that of Fénelon and the medieval fortress of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle are also worth a visit. The Dordogne valley, listed as a Historic Monument in 1966, dominates the whole of the Dordogne valley from its rocky spur, offering its visitors incomparable panoramas of the surrounding countryside.
Family? Carsac-Aillac is definitely a good idea. The commune is close to several animal parks, such as the Zoological Reserve of Calviac (6 kilometres away), or the Monkey Forest (45 kilometres away). Fancy a sports getaway? The Squirrel Forest (6 kilometres away) is a must do if you like adventure and tree climbing. But it would be a shame to deprive you of mountain bike outings in the direction of Sainte-Mondane, Rocamadour, Sarlat-la-Canéda and the neighbouring Lot. Do you prefer water activities? Carsac-Aillac will then satisfy all your desires: being crossed by the Dordogne, the commune is a real open-air paradise for canoe, kayak or rafting enthusiasts who will be able to revel in absolutely magnificent panoramas during their trips on the water with the strength of their arms. In addition to discovering the entire south of the town, from the Falaise de Monfort to the Roche Percée, via the Rocher de la Cave, Sainte-Mondane and the Château de Rouffillac, you will discover all that this little corner of history has to offer.
