Just south of Bagnols-sur-Cèze, about twenty kilometres from Orange, Uzès and Avignon, Laudun-l'Ardoise is an invitation to plunge into history. Cultural, natural and exotic, this Gardoise town has everything, yes everything to please holidaymakers in search of authenticity and discovery.
It is in the department of Gard, in the Occitan region, that the town of Laudun-l'Ardoise is located. Facing Provence, just on the border of Languedoc-Roussillon, this charming hill-side town is a small nugget surrounded by vineyards as far as the eye can see. Here, it is the past that jumps out at you, thanks to the small streets tangled as if frozen in time. The houses are old, decorated with loggias, ornate doors, cellars and ancient wells that tell the story of this water city. Bordered to the east by the Cèze and one of the meanders of the Rhône that separates it from the Vaucluse, Laudun-l'Ardoise stretches from the Camp de César plateau to the banks of the river, offering visitors singular contrasts and endless discoveries. The Camp de César is one of the most beautiful sites in the commune: an ancient town of 18 hectares perched at the confluence of the Tave and Cèze valleys, occupied since the Iron Age, it still bears splendid evidence of ancient dwellings, and gives the impression of a visit as if frozen in time. You can also note that from this promontory, you will be able to discover astonishing panoramas of both L'Ardoise and Laudun, but also of the Rhône and Mont Ventoux in the distance and the Dentelles de Montmirail.
In the heart of the town, the church of Notre-Dame-la-Neuve is worth a visit, particularly for the splendour of its southern Gothic style architecture, which stands out in the centre of the village. Equipped with good walking shoes, you can also visit splendid sites such as the Saint-Géniès chapel, which is a charming detour, or the Sainte-Foy hill overlooking the village, which is worth a visit for its Planchon hanging garden. The commune of Laudun-l'Ardoise is also home to some splendid castles, such as the Château de Lascours dating from the Carolingian period. Surrounded by a moat, this castle on stilts is one of the only ones in the department located on white water, and will amaze lovers of history and beautiful stones. A second castle is worth the detour, it is that of Bord: perched at the top of its small hill, at an altitude of 175 metres, it dominates the Tave plain with its ruins which seem to bear witness to an ancient defensive castle. If it is worth the detour, it is also for the incredible panoramas on offer on the surrounding vineyards, as well as for the small bucolic hike through the vegetation that links the town to its heights. And if there is indeed a majestic site which makes the reputation of Laudun-l'Ardoise, it is its Aqueduct of Balouvière. This splendid building, rightly nicknamed the "little Pont-du-Gard" (located 26 kilometres further south), was once used to supply the village with spring water and will be a perfect hiking site for those who love to go out in the countryside.
On foot or by bike, you will undoubtedly love to wander through the vineyards, the scrublands planted with fragrant aromatic essences, the orchards in bloom and the olive groves that delight the gourmands. In the direction of Orange, Bagnols-sur-Cèze, Avignon, Sorgues or Uzès, between hikes, river swimming and mountain bike excursions, there is a good chance that you will fall under the spell of the region!
