With its exceptional coastline, world-famous vineyards and prestigious cities, the Gironde is one of the most sought-after destinations, and for that reason it offers a playground, discovery and enchantment that is second to none.
From the Medoc peak to the bench of Arguin, the Gironde invites you to enjoy the ocean on more than 126 kilometers. At the heart of one of its famous seaside resorts (Soulac-sur-Mer, Hourtin, Lacanau, Arcachon...) or on a more confidential beach, you will find your little corner of paradise to rest, bathe or surf the waves. But the coastline also invites you to admire some must-see sites. In the south of the department, go to the highest dune of Europe, the Pilat, which culminates in 110 meters and, near, discover the oyster huts of the basin of Arcachon. To the north, go to see the oldest lighthouse in Europe (1611), Cordouan, classified historical monument since 1862.
Continue your exploration of the fabulous heritage of the Gironde by visiting Bordeaux. As you stroll along the quays, you will appreciate the facades of the houses of the XVIIIth century whose elegant harmony was hailed by a inscription on the World Heritage of Unesco. You can also admire the Place de la Bourse, its immense mirror of water and, in the heart of the city, the Saint-André cathedral, the Pey-Berland tower and the Grand Theater. Then, discover the magnificent medieval city of Saint-Émilion. With its stone houses, its small staircases, its tower of the Roy and its monolithic church, it has an incomparable charm. Do not miss the bastides of Cadillac, Libourne, Monségur or Sainte-Foy-la-Grande.
To fully appreciate the other natural and cultural resources of the Gironde, you will be able to borrow the many paths that crisscross it. With 4200 kilometers of hiking trails, more than half open to mountain bikes and 700 kilometers of cycle paths, the department invites you to discover the regional park of the Landes de Gascogne, the great lakes (Hourtin-Carcans, Lacanau and Cazaux) or the unavoidable Routes du Vin. Finally, follow the itineraries that will lead you to the castle of Roquetaillade, the citadel of Blaye or the lighthouse of Cap-Ferret. And enjoy all these getaways to taste the local products : Arcachon oysters, Blayais asparagus, Pauillac lamb, Bazas beef and nectars from the Bordeaux vineyards.
