Montgenèvre is a renowned ski resort of the Hautes-Alpes, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is located at the crossing of the valley of Clarée and the valley of Susa, not far from the Franco-Italian border, in the Pays des Ecrins.
Its history goes back to Roman antiquity. According to legend, the troops of Hannibal would have crossed the Alpes by passing through this pass. The fortifications erected a little later are allowed to admire in places. Perched on Mount Chaberton, the "Fort of the Clouds" raises its eight masonry towers surmounted by cannons to defend the pass of Montgenèvre. If you wish to visit it, you will have to arm yourself with patience and to provide you with the appropriate equipment because this work dating from the beginning of the 20th century culminates to more than 3000 m. Other monuments of military architecture decorate this natural landscape, like the fort of Gondran and the fort of the Janus.
Since the Olympic Games in Albertville in 1992, the Montgenèvre resort enjoys an international reputation. The historical center attracts many tourists who come to visit the Sainte-Anne chapel, the Saint-Maurice church and the chapel of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows, which still bears the stigma of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela from Italy.
In summer, Montgenèvre comes alive to offer holidaymakers countless activities : mountain biking, golf, horseback riding... The Luge Monty Express is an attraction in its own right. Unique in France, this toboggan fixed on a monorail devours more than 1400 meters of descent. It is the longest run of the Hexagon ! Montgenèvre also organizes several sporting events, such as the Sky Race Chaberton, chosen among the ten most beautiful trails in France by the specialized press.

There is the COVID, so be it. But fortunately we were able to go to Clavière to have something to eat or drink (outside), because in Montgenèvre, not much or nothing in the afternoon.

The ski lifts were closed but the ESF set up various activities to keep the children occupied. The carpet at the top of the beginner's area was open so we were able to do some runs and our son was able to take his first ski lessons.

We advise you "La Tourmente" (cocktail bar - rue de l'Eglise, 05100 Montgenèvre): great reception, cocktails too and very professional! If you like very good bread and excellent pastries : "Le Chalet des Gourmandises" (Hameau de L'Obélisque)

Family resort, which allows good discounts if you buy your ski pass 10 days before via internet. Animations every evening (and often free). The ESI courses are top (maximum group of 7 against 12 for the ESF).

Skiing on the Italian side, less people on the chairlifts. Eat lunch on the Italian side at "Le Coche" (home made and fast food and low prices). Pizza U Cintu in the village Montgenèvre.

To be recommended: the restaurant "Les Chalmettes" (at the end of the building Les Chalmettes): very friendly, smiling and very accommodating staff and owners, very attentive. For a meal on arrival at noon on the terrace, a snack and the Friday evening meal (the day before our return - I think that for the evening it is not always open). Tartiflettes, Savoyard fondues, raclette and at very reasonable prices. And a well-organized room: we're not on top of each other. We will go back next time (we were 8: 5 adults and 3 children).

A lot of activities possible outside of skiing: snowshoe walks to Claviere, Italy...We liked the small Italian villages nearby (10 min by car).

Two very good bakeries on Montgenèvre. One also very nice (on the Italian side) in Clavières via the pedestrian track. And a little trip to the side of Nevache for the ride.

Station level: disappointing. The half-open domain, on the other hand, is full to the brim: this is not normal. There is no animation for the stay because of a lack of staff everywhere. Ice throughout the station (dangerous limit). I think next year we'll go somewhere else.
