Picturesque : this is the perfect word to describe Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle. Undeniably marked by Basque history thanks to the superb labourdine houses dotted with red and white streets, the town has some beautiful monuments that you can visit during your strolls in town, The church of Saint Peter is listed as a Historic Monument thanks to its superb interior decoration, but also thanks to its 19th century Legarreta washhouse, its ancient bridges such as that of Utsalea surrounded by legends and the bridge of the Virgin Mary, located on the way to Santiago de Compostela. At the western end of the commune, you will also be able to observe the ruins of the castle called "des Sorcières". Built in the 15th century, this mysterious monument owes its name to the famous witch trials that took place in 1609, whose aim was to eradicate from the region all witches, witches, healers and fortune tellers of the time. After being burned during the Revolution, this castle covered with ivy is now visible only in a ruined state, but was nevertheless listed as a Historic Monument in 1925.
As far as culture is concerned, Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle is the cradle of "xistera", one of the ways of practising Basque pelota, a real institution in the village. You can learn more about this emblematic sport of the region by going to the Pilotari Ecomuseum, or by initiating yourself to this practice on the fronton of the village or on the side of the trinquet Gantxiki.
With its 1300 hectares of forest, Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle is the green lung of the Basque coast. In all, there are more than 100 kilometres of safe, hiking and cycling trails along the forest to allow nature lovers to make superb excursions in the shade of its generous and fragrant vegetation. With its circuits adapted to all levels, from the simplest walks to medium mountain sports hikes, young and old can easily discover some of the most beautiful panoramas of the commune. For budding or experienced yogis, Yoga hikes are also organized in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle at the foot of the Suhalmendi for Zen hikes across the moors, along the Nivelle and through the pastures : an ideal activity to make the void while enjoying the panoramas of the mountain. The Suhalmendi is also the ideal place for hikes to meet the black-headed Basque pigs, raised in freedom, but also for an exceptional view of the Basque and Landes coasts, as well as the Pyrenean mountains and Spain. Accessible on foot or by mountain bike from the centre of Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, Mont Sainte-Barbe also offers superb views over the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the Pyrenees and Mount Ursuya, beloved by walkers.
Finally, its lake decorated with a pretty beach of fine sand will allow you to bathe as soon as the beautiful days arrive. A haven of peace fed by 4 springs of fresh water, it extends over more than 12 hectares in the heart of Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle. In addition to relaxing in the sun and swimming with family or friends, Lake Nivelle is the ideal place to go pedal-boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, waterslide, stand-up paddle and many other water activities. It is surrounded by marked trails including a healthy trail with picnic areas, to allow you to have lunch overlooking the lake.
