From the mountains to the green plains, passing by the famous Basque Corniche where heavenly coves and wild rocks alternate, the commune of Urrugne is one of the largest cities of the Basque Country. Its great diversity of landscapes, its border with Spain and its omnipresent traditions make it an ideal destination for restful and dynamic holidays.
Nestled between Saint-Jean-de-Luz and the Spanish border, Urrugne is definitely the ideal place to settle down and discover the beauty of the Basque Country. Authentic and traditional, this peaceful village has a strong historical heritage: walk through its alleys, at the foot of its large typical Basque houses. Oriented to the east to protect families from winds and rain from the ocean, these whitewashed houses are recognizable by their red painted woodwork : they are called "Etxea", pronounced "ette-chéa". Cross its charming squares and visit the church of Saint Vincent to admire its organ, but also the Chapel of the Calvary Mount, the Chapel of Our Lady of Socorri and finally the unmissable Castle of Urtubie. Located at 1 rue Bernard de Coral, a few minutes from the great beach of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, this fortified building whose construction dates back to the 14th century is renowned for its original architecture. Classified as a Historic Monument, this castle, which has belonged to the same family since 1341, has seen many of the great names in French history, from Louis XI to Louis XIV, passing through its walls. During your visit, don't miss the chapel, the 18th century orangery, and take the time to stroll in its park and its superb English gardens.
At the foot of the Pyrenees and facing the Atlantic Ocean, in a perfectly bucolic setting, the commune combines the assets of charm to conquer the hearts of nature lovers. Open to the Atlantic Ocean, Urrugne is bordered by the Basque Corniche, a rocky coast stretching for more than 8 kilometres along the commune, where cliffs, coves, moors and magnificent views of the omnipresent ocean alternate. This cornice stretching between Hendaye and Saint-Jean-de-Luz promises coastal walkers superb moments, absolutely exotic. During this excursion, you will also have the opportunity to see, standing facing the ocean on its rocky promontory, the magnificent Château-Observatoire Abbadia. Located in the commune of Hendaye, this neo-Gothic building built in the 19th century is one of the most beautiful residences on the Basque Coast. Its astronomical observatory, its English park and its cultures of ancient exotic fruits make it a site to visit absolutely. Running for more than 20 kilometres between Bidart and Hendaye, the coastal path offers you the chance to see some of the most beautiful panoramas of the Basque Country. If you are in the area during the winter, you may have the chance to watch the surfers trying to tame the giant Belharra wave from the cliffs ! Our advice : opt for a walk in the direction of Guéthary-Hendaye in order to be able to benefit from superb points of view on the mountains, and do not forget your camera to immortalize the panorama since the cliffs of Flysch. When it comes to hiking, Urrugne has what it takes to satisfy the most insatiable walkers: largely composed of a mountain area, the commune is dotted with numerous hiking and cycling paths, suitable for all levels. The old smugglers' trails will lead you through the vegetation from the Ibardin pass to the Xoldokogaina lake : ideal for the whole family, this hike will allow you to enjoy beautiful views over the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the Pic de la Thune, the forests and the mountains surrounding Urrugne. The Insola Valley hike, the Santiago de Compostela route or the Calvary Mount hike and the GR10 are among the most popular excursions in the Urrugne area : they may allow you to cross the Pottok road (pronounced potiok), these ponies living freely in the Basque massifs.
In addition to its incredible nature, the Basque Coast is renowned for its breathtaking beaches and Urrugne is no exception. Located in the Socoa district, the four beaches of the seaside resort are adored by families. The "Socoa Beach" is one of the busiest, with its dream setting and dikes protecting from the strong waves. At low tide, the "Plage du Carré" will delight the little ones with its small natural pools in the middle of the rocks overlooking the Fort of Socoa, while the "Plage du Fort" will be more sought after because of its calm and picturesque setting. Finally, the "Socoa Diver's Beach" is totally reserved for water sports: you can surf (of course !), dinghy, jet-ski, kitesurf, canoe or sailboat.
