It is 13 kilometres west of Draguignan that the town of Lorgues thrives. Typical village of Provence halfway between the Gorges du Verdon and the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, Lorgues is dotted with vineyards, olive groves, woods, cereal fields and magnificent rivers where you will adore strolling to the sound of cicadas singing.
Sunny village of Provence, Lorgues is marked by the seal of history. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the village still bears traces of its past, notably in the image of its dolmens, but also of its ancient ramparts, vestiges of the Middle Ages. The course of the Republic is the central artery of Lorgues, lined with bourgeois and wealthy houses, built between the 18th and 19th centuries. You will find one of its most beautiful buildings : the Town Hall of Lorgues. Completed in 1833, it testifies to the importance of the city in the local landscape after the Revolution. Not far away, the Clock Tower surmounted by a bell tower dominates the city from the top of its 28 meters. But the most imposing building of Lorgues is certainly its collegiate church Saint-Martin : second largest religious monument of the Var, this church built at the beginning of the XVIIIe century has rich interior decorations, among which an organ, a pulpit and very beautiful ornaments. Continue your visit of the heart of the village by heading towards the Place Neuve decorated with plane trees, an old Courthouse, a fountain and a laundry, the whole forming a perfect postcard of holidays typically Provençal. During your excursions, you will certainly cross the road of numerous fountains and wash houses scattered throughout the city, as well as the remains of flour and olive oil mills, testifying to a strong agricultural activity in the region in the past. And if art and historical monuments interest you, then you can add to the (big !) list of things to visit the chapel of Notre Dame de Ben Va (3 kilometers from Lorgues) and Saint-Ferréol for its museum of Sacred Art very famous in the region.
Hikers can take two routes through Lorgues and its surroundings : the "La campagne de Pey-Cervier" trail (5.4 kilometres) and the "Saint Ferréol" trail (2 kilometres). For nature expeditions, we also advise you to go to the Parc du Château de Berne: spread over 500 hectares, this park is crossed by 6 hiking trails of 3 to 15 kilometres and 4 marked trails for mountain bikes (from 4 to 10 kilometres), which will allow you to discover all the beauty of this site with its magnificent fauna and flora. Panoramas on the Massifs des Maures, discovery of a Roman bridge, vineyards, ruins hidden in the scrubland... So many magnificent landscapes to contemplate with family or friends. On the side of the hill of Saint-Ferréol, not far from the wall of the hermitage, there is an oppidum, a kind of refuge made of dry stone walls built on the heights to serve as an observation post during attacks. This Ligurian camp dating from the 4th century BC is the oldest testimony of human presence in Lorgues. Right next to this site that you can visit, you will also find a healthy course, perfect for some outdoor exercises.
By choosing Lorgues as a place to pack your bags, it will be easy for you to go to Lake Sainte-Croix and the Gorges du Verdon (30 kilometres away) for rafting, canoeing, canyoning, water skiing, sailing, paragliding and climbing, horse riding... But also in Sillans-la-Cascade (24 kilometers), near the troglodytic caves of Villecroze (15 kilometers), Draguignan (13 kilometers) or Saint-Tropez (50 kilometers) to enjoy its beaches and its many water activities adored by young and old.
