It is not for nothing that every year, many holidaymakers travel from all over the world to discover the captivating, elegant and discreet city of Uzès. Halfway between Avignon, Nîmes and Alès, the town of Uzès offers its lucky visitors some of the most outstanding treasures of French heritage in the heart of magnificent hilly landscapes. A real breath of fresh air in the little corner of paradise that is Provence, Uzès is above all known for its wonderful Pont du Gard, as well as for its authentic old medieval village.
It is at an altitude of 162 metres that the wonderful village of Uzès, "the first duchy of France", thrives. Classified as a "City of Art and History", Uzès is a raw jewel, nestled in an environment conducive to discovery in the middle of a landscape of scrubland. A must-see destination in the Gard, this picturesque village will amaze all lovers of medieval architecture with an exciting behind-the-scenes look at French history and heritage. With its intertwined alleys dotted with 17th and 18th century houses recognizable by their golden-toned facades, its fountains, its artists' galleries, its arcaded squares such as the sublime Place aux Herbes and its impressive private mansions, Uzès is a city where it is pleasant to stroll. With its many restaurants, Place aux Herbes is a very popular place to visit, especially for its Provençal market with its singing accents that you can walk through every Saturday morning. Known for its abundant local products, this colourful market cultivates the love and tradition of beautiful local products such as black winter truffles, snails in jars, artisanal oils, as well as wines and honeys from small Uzbek artisans.
If there is one flagship site not to be missed during your visit to Uzès, it is its ducal castle, also known as the Duchy of Uzès: steeped in history, this absolutely splendid castle combines in a single building the influences of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Age of Enlightenment and Modern Times. Built on an ancient Roman castoreum, this castle houses a Gothic chapel with magnificent stained glass windows, as well as a thick square tower, the "Bermonde Tower", from which the view of the city and the surrounding villages is breathtaking. Another striking building in Uzès that you can't miss at all: the Romanesque Fenestrelle Tower. A rare example of a 12th century round bell tower, this tower, with its original architecture and its 42 windows, gives it the appearance of a lace tower from a distance. Close to Place aux Herbes, don't miss the medieval garden at the foot of the King's Tower, famous for its many medicinal plants and ancient vegetable crops. The Town Hall and its facade decorated with pilasters, the Bishopric Square, the former Episcopal Palace and the Georges Borias Museum are to be added to the list of sites not to be missed when you come to Uzès. Gourmets, whether young or old, will not fail to visit the famous Haribo Candy Museum! Impossible to miss if you are in Uzès: you will discover the history of Haribo sweets, from the small ZAN liquorice factory to the expansion of what will later become one of the largest factories in the world, you will be amazed by the history of Dragibus, Car en Sac and other Tagada strawberries.
How to evoke Uzès without mentioning what makes its reputation throughout the world: the Pont du Gard. Imposing and impressive, this secular building, a true stone colossus, is breathtaking. A masterpiece of antiquity, it spans the Gardon river and is spread over three levels, 275 metres wide. Located on the most visited ancient site in France, this essential Roman aqueduct, which was once used to supply Uzès and Nîmes with water, has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. We recommend that photo lovers go there at sunset to capture the magnificent spectacle of the sun on the arches of the bridge.
In addition to being worth a visit for its exceptional architecture, the Pont du Gard site is loved by sports enthusiasts for the wide range of activities it offers. The most adventurous can swim under 25 metres of its arch, enjoy the unique experience of flying over the bridge in a hot-air balloon, via ferrata, rafting, canyoning, paddle or opt for canoeing or kayaking on the meanders of the Gardon for more than 157 kilometres, through amazing landscapes. Finally, if you prefer cycling excursions, then we advise you to take the Voie Verte du Pont du Gard or the Via Rhôna, perfect itineraries to marvel at the beauty of Uzès and its region.
