Center Loire Valley
The Centre Loire Valley is made up of the Cher, Eure-et-Loir, Indre, Indre-et-Loire, Loir-et-Cher and the Loiret departments. The bordering regions are Limousin, Poitou-Charentes, Pays de la Loire, Lower and Upper Normandy, Ile de France, Burgundy and Auvergne. The longest river in France, the Loire, crosses this region. The castles lining the river are prestigious historical and architectural sites. To name the more renowned castles: Chambord, Château d'Amboise, Château d'Azay-le-Rideau and Chenonceau, which is the second Most visited historical attraction in France. No less than 50 outstanding castles have been identified in the Loire Valley, but Chenonceau castle has been registered on the UNESCO world heritage list. The Centre Loire Valley also contains many cathedrals, mainly in the Gothic style, including Chartres cathedral (and its extraordinary stained glass windows) and the cathedrals of Bourges and Orléans. As regards the region's natural features, there are 3 parks and the park in Perche is particularly worthy of note for its hedged farmland, rivers and authentic villages.
