Isolated in the garrigue, this timeless building is worth a visit both for the magnificence of its building and for its Italian-style gardens, rose garden and location, perfect for hiking and mountain biking on the first foothills of the Corbières.

Not far from Ferrals-les-Corbières, 50 minutes by car, the Fortress of Salses is definitely one of the most impressive buildings in the region. A military structure built between 1497 and 1502 by the Catholic kings of Spain, this imposing fortress is the quintessential example of the finest military art of the 15th century. With its thick 12-metre wide walls, walkways, fortified keep and traps, this historic site will take the whole family back in time. The Château d'Aguilar, 40 kilometres away, is also worth a visit: perched on its rocky hill overlooking the Haut Fitou vineyard, it was in charge of monitoring the border with Spain during the 12th century. Particularly well located to discover some of the most beautiful panoramas of the region, it is visited during the summer, and often hosts shows and demonstrations of knightly combat. Further north, hikers will certainly cross the road of the famous Pont-Canal de l'Argent-Double, which evacuates the excess water from the Canal du Midi, or even that of the Lac de Jouarres: a small haven of peace a stone's throw from Homps, this immense body of water becomes a real paradise for swimming. You can also canoe, kayak, sail, dinghy, paddle or catamaran at your leisure. Do you prefer seaside escapades to lake idleness?
