Watered by the Gardon d'Alès river, the village of Les Salles-du-Gardon is one of those little nuggets that you want to keep for yourself, just for yourself. In the Gard department, 10 kilometres north of Alès, Les Salles-du-Gardon takes its name from "Mansus de Salis", from the Germanic "sala", which means "castle". A feudal castle dominates Les Salles-du-Gardon, perched at the top of its rocky promontory. Built during the 13th century, on one of the hills of the commune, 4 kilometres south-east of the village, this building is not open to the public but a small climb to its base is well worth the detour, so that you can admire the fortifications and the main courtyard, not forgetting the Saint-Pierre chapel which hosts concerts on the occasion of heritage days.

Divided into two distinct parts by the Cévennes fault, Les Salles-du-Gardon has two dazzling faces: on one side, limestone and aridity dominate the panorama to reveal to visitors superb holm oaks, while on the other, schist is king, and fragrant pines and chestnut trees poetically draw the typical Cévennes landscape. All in all, the commune offers to discover a variety of landscapes, each one more majestic than the other, criss-crossed by hiking trails that will allow you to capture all the essence and beauty. The Route de Florac and the Gorges du Tarn 10 kilometres away are a must, as is the Lac de Camboux 4 kilometres away. In the heart of the Cevennes, in the middle of an abundant and preserved nature, this lake equipped with a nautical base is absolutely ideal for a nautical parenthesis. Whether you like swimming, stand-up paddle, canoeing, pedal boat rides, or whether you are more into caving, mountain biking, climbing, via ferrata, hiking or canyoning, you will find something to suit all your desires.

The Mont Lozère at 30 minutes, but also the Dinopedia park, the small train of Andorge in the Cévennes, the imposing Château de Portes at 10 kilometers north, the marvelous Grotte de la Cocalière (30 kilometers away), the cave of Soustelle, the castle of Sauvages in Saint-Jean-du-Pin, Anduze and its medieval heart, without forgetting Alès the cultural and greedy one, Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and its canoeing site among the most recognized in France (55 kilometers further east), the Chauvet cave 1 hour away, or the Pont du Gard located about 60 kilometers away are all emblematic sites of the region that you may have the opportunity to visit during your stay in Les Salles-du-Gardon.
