About thirty kilometres south of Agen, in the heart of the Gascon country, Nérac is a destination that is definitely full of charm. At the foot of the Garonne, the commune is watered by the waters of the Baïse and surrounded by the Buzet vineyard, promising its visitors many sporting, gourmet and bucolic escapades.
A stroll through the streets of Nérac is a bit like a dive into the heart of history. Built on a Gallo-Roman villa, the city of Nérac proudly bears the traces of its rich historical past, whether they date back to the Bronze Age (in the Nazareth district) or the Middle Ages. A medieval city adored by Henry IV and his wife Queen Margot, Nérac was also one of the fiefdoms of Protestantism from the 16th century onwards. Old Nérac still has many old buildings that you can discover during your travels along its quays, old houses, old tanneries that have become art galleries and its magnificent Gothic bridge over the Baïse. If there is one monument not to be missed, it is the Château-Musée Henri IV: built during the 15th century, this architectural masterpiece is composed of superb vaulted rooms, period tapestries and many paintings dedicated to Henri IV and the Albret family. Witness of the rank and wealth of this family, this castle, which was largely dismantled during the Revolution, is now open to the public and offers many activities throughout the year to help you discover all its secrets. Not far from there, the Moulin des Tours de Barbaste and its Romanesque Bridge are two other major sites in the history of Nérac. Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, this fortified mill and its sublime bridge are among the most beautiful buildings in Aquitaine. You can take the bridge and visit these beloved historical buildings of Henri IV, who signed his letters "Henri, miller of the Barbaste Towers". Stroll along the quays, through the Place des Tanneries, rue Séderie, then take a break from the port of Nérac, for a romantic cruise on the Baïse aboard Prince Henry's cruise ships: a relaxing and bucolic walk, which will allow you to contemplate very beautiful panoramas of Nérac and its history. Back on land, we recommend a visit to the Royal Park of La Garenne: designed by Queen Margot, the Royal Park of La Garenne faces the Gardens and Baths of Le Roy. A place of contemplation adored by onlookers, it houses many fountains such as the Fountain of Fleurette, as well as a kiosk, a washhouse and beautiful alleys along the Baïze River. Romantic as you wish, you can only be seduced by this park, whose main driveway is very evocatively named "Chemin des Amoureux".
Whether you like hiking or cycling, you will inevitably find something to delight the whole family during your stay in Nérac, since the town is crossed by many hiking routes, such as the "Balade de Nazareht" (11.4 kilometres) or the "Balade de la Garenne" (4.3 kilometres). Finally, to complete this family stay, nothing beats going to the Ludo Parc, a water park where young and old can enjoy relaxation areas, swimming pools, waterfalls, bubble baths, slides or activities such as aquabike in a place decorated with Gallo-Roman remains.
