A small commune in the Bouches-du-Rhône, nestled in the heart of the Southern Region (formerly Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), Carnoux-en-Provence is set in the middle of fragrant garrigues and thyme-lined hills. Located 8 kilometres from Cassis and 18 kilometres from Marseille, Carnoux-en-Provence offers its lucky visitors an ideal setting for an exotic holiday, between forests and heavenly creeks.
If Carnoux is rather modern in appearance, far from the small traditional villages of Provence, it is because it is one of the last born in the French municipalities. Created in 1966, Carnoux-en-Provence is ideally located for a family holiday in the countryside. Just next to the Saint-Cyr massif, the city offers hiking enthusiasts many walks, sometimes sporting and sometimes recreational, for all levels of practice. Between Mount Puget to the south and the Huveaune valley to the north, the Saint-Cyr massif is dotted with a myriad of itineraries to the rhythm of its limestone peaks: from marked paths to mule tracks of yesteryear, you can try to climb Mount Carpiagne (646 metres above sea level) or Mount Saint-Cyr (610 metres). In the town, the Carnoux-en-Provence route through the hills (14 kilometres) will take you on a belvedere road north of the Languilard plateau to the peaks of Mont Fleuri, overlooking the whole town and offering pretty panoramic views over the Huveaune valley, Marseille, Cap Canaille and the magnificent bay of Cassis. On foot, on horseback or by bike, we assure you that these trips are worth it, for incredible views.
A guarantee of calm and a change of scenery, Carnoux-en-Provence is not really a tourist destination in the strict sense of the word, but its main asset remains its location just a stone's throw from the second largest city in France, Marseille. In no time at all, you will be able to visit the Phocaean city and enjoy its natural treasures, from its Old Port to its beaches and its famous creeks. The most beautiful creeks in Marseille are located south of the city, behind the Marseilleveyre massif and the Puget massif. They face the Riou archipelago, in the heart of the Calanques National Park, renowned for its beauty and its many hiking routes. From the Mounine to the wonderful Sormiou, via Sugiton la découpée, Port-Pin and En-Vau, you will undoubtedly be amazed by the magnificence of these extraordinary places, where you may have the chance to indulge in long relaxing sessions under the sun, beach volleyball games and a few refreshing moments. The Sormiou cove will delight divers, while the impressive En-Vau cove and its high cliffs will delight photographers and amateur kayakers who can discover the coast with paddles, sometimes accompanied by wild boars who like to swim in the translucent waters of this amazing cove.
Finally, how to evoke Carnoux-en Provence and the south of France without talking about gastronomy? Largely inspired by seafood, the local cuisine is renowned for its sunny flavours and generous dishes: anchovy, artichoke with barigoule, bouillabaisse, pistou soup, tapenade, garlic, Provence honey, olive oil, white nougat, cod brandade, Provencal stew, grilled fish, fougasse and panisse will delight the most gourmet holidaymakers!
