In the far north of Île-de-Ré, Les Portes-en-Ré looks like a small village at the end of the world. If it is peaceful during the winter, it comes alive on sunny days to the delight of its lucky visitors. A city of character, Les Portes-en-Ré will conquer you thanks to its magnificent alleyways decorated with flowers of hollyhocks and dotted with white residences with green painted shutters, typical of the island's villages. It is also certainly the most upscale town on the Île de Ré, offering a splendid and soothing setting for rest. You will love to get lost in its streets, and discover the central square where the market takes place, a charming square where you will find many cafés and restaurants where you can have coffee and lunch. In the evening, the square comes alive to become the most popular place for young people, who come to dine and celebrate in an always chic atmosphere.
Surrounded by nature, the commune of Les Portes-en-Ré is halfway between the ocean, forests and salt marshes that have long made the island's reputation. For the duration of this stay under the Portingalais sun, leave your car behind to favour walking or cycling, the most popular means of transport for island visitors. Stroll through the paths of the Lizay forest to the north, walk through the Trousse-Chemise woods to the south, explore the Lilleau des Niges Nature and Ornithological Reserve and its salt marshes to the west, hike towards Pointe du Fier to the east through the dunes, or towards the pointe des Niges. Visit the chapel of the Redoubt, the Maison du Fier and the Cabane des Fontaines by taking the "Sentier Botanique", wander along the magnificent Banc du Bucheron which is discovered at low tide, along the banks of the Riveau, and through the channel of the Vieux-Port.
It is impossible to stay in Les Portes-en-Ré without mentioning its major asset: its beaches. There are about fifteen of them, each more beautiful than the next. If the "Petit Bec" is ideal for admiring the sunset for a romantic evening, it is also a surf spot eminently recognized in the field of skiing, just like the beach of the nearby Lizay. The beach of "Gros Jonc" will delight kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts who will be able to enjoy all their favourite activities thanks to its nautical club. La Redoute beach is known for its chapel and panoramic view of the waters of the Pertuis Breton, while Anse de Fourneau beach is appreciated by lovers of tranquility and wide open spaces. The beach of Trousse-Chemise is certainly the most appreciated of all the beaches of Portes-en-Ré: privileged as much for families as for sportsmen, it is one of the most beautiful on the island, both wild and authentic. Not far from the latter, you will find the Golf de Trousse-Chemise, well known to golf lovers for its course in the heart of the wonderful nature of Les Portes-en-Ré: within everyone's reach, it will delight greens enthusiasts of its 9 holes as well as amateurs curious to learn the pleasures of golf.
Finally, don't forget to taste the local local products! Wines, salt, oysters and potatoes are essential to local gastronomy, which will certainly delight the whole family.
