Perched in the highest hills of the Périgord Noir and surrounded by a preserved and varied nature, Rouffignac Saint Cernin is one of the pearls of the Dordogne. A land of gastronomy, culture and escape, Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin-de-Reilhac offers its visitors multiple landscapes made up of green valleys, caves, agricultural hillsides and thick forests where there are dozens of walking routes. High place of the regional tourism, this village is the perfect place to put down the suitcases of its holidays if you seek a green destination for a stay in family or between friends.
Entirely rebuilt after being demolished during the Second World War, Rouffignac still retains its church and some old houses from its history. Together with the 27 other villages that make up the Community of Communes of the Vallée de l'Homme, Rouffignac offers its visitors a multitude of diverse and varied panoramas to discover via 675 kilometres of marked itineraries for nearly forty hiking loops through crystallization caves and vertiginous cliffs, troglodytic sites (such as La Roque Saint-Christophe 15 kilometres away), ornate caves, deposits (such as those of Castel Merle 20 minutes from Rouffignac), museums, castles, theme parks, fortresses, wooded gardens (such as those of Terrasson 40 minutes from Rouffignac) and forests that make up the local landscape. Hiking lovers, know that a holiday in Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin is the guarantee of beautiful excursions, perfect for breathing a big bowl of fresh air. Several hiking loops adapted to all levels cross the village, such as the "Boucle des abîmes", the "Boucle de l'Herm", the "Boucle de Saint Cernin" and the "Boucle des mammouths". By bike, 4 loops are also at the departure of the village, and you can even opt for horse rides to discover all the singularity of the landscapes of the Vézère Valley from the Ferme équestre de Sardin.
Located downstream of the Vézère Valley, Rouffignac hides beautiful nuggets, like its famous prehistoric cave classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the "Cave of 100 Mammoths", it houses superb rock paintings dating back to more than 11,000 BC : you can visit it during a playful and instructive walk on board a small train. With more than 250 animal representations along its 8 kilometres of gallery, it is the emblematic cave of the commune. If there is another site to see absolutely during your stay in Rouffignac, it is its magnificent Château de l'Herm. Built at the very end of the 15th century, this castle with a history tormented and reddened by crime is surrounded by many urban legends. Established in the middle of superb fields flowered in the heart of the forest Barade, it was abandoned then rehabilitated thanks to the novel "Jacquou le Croquant". Today it is a place for visits, archaeological research and concerts during the summer period.
But the cradle of humanity is also famous for its many rivers and streams criss-crossing every corner of the Périgord Noir. During sunny afternoons or whole days, you can canoe and paddle in the Gorges de L'Auvézère, on the Vézère, or on the side of the Eyzies leisure centre, just a quarter of an hour from the centre of Rouffignac.
Finally, Rouffignac-Saint-Cernin is also a marked gastronomy that honours the flavours of the French terroir. You will be able to taste chestnuts, truffles, honey, melons, cheeses and strawberries which make the reputation of the region during its Sunday morning market or during tastings in its good signs... A good table = "Le Puit Fleuri" in Rouffignac : farmhouse inn but which I find a little expensive. I also found in Montignac the restaurant "Au Plaisir de Montignac" which I find perfect for balanced meals.

There is so much to see in the region. Follow the advice of the person who welcomes you, both on the sites to visit and on the good restaurants in the region. We particularly enjoyed the visit of the cave of Rouffignac and comments from the young guide who accompanied us.
