In the western part, only 12 km from Pazin, lies the fantastic, medieval Pazin Castle (Kastel) 130 m above the cliff where the Pazin?ica River flows into the Pazin Pit: This is the setting for the novel Mathias Sandorf by the famous French writer Jules Verne, which was published in 1885. Nowadays there is a Jules Verne Club in Pazin, and at the end of June the annual Jules Verne Days take place.
