Location
Situated east of Punta Sardegna and protected from the Mistral wind, Palau lies halfway between the famous Costa Smeralda and Santa Teresa Gallura. The name Palau is thought to derive from 'parago' or 'parao', words used by local fishermen to indicate spots on the coast sheltered from the wind. A pleasant stroll along the promenade leads to the town centre and its piazza, where a lively handicraft market is held every summer evening. Along the lively Via Nazionale, there are restaurants, fast food outlets, Sardinian handicraft shops, jewellery shops and nightclubs, leading all the way to Palau's marina. From here, it is only a 20-minute ferry ride to the island of La Maddalena, which is connected by a bridge to Caprera. This excursion offers interesting opportunities from a historical and naturalistic point of view, with an obligatory stop for a swim at one of the most beautiful beaches in the archipelago. For those who like to discover history, there is also the possibility of visiting a small ethnographic museum in Palau, where exhibits and displays narrate the agro-pastoral life of the stazzo, a typical home of Gallura life between the 19th and 20th centuries.
Olbia airport is about 40 km away.
