The Antiguo neighborhood is the oldest in the city. An ideal place to walk, with its own personality that has known how to modernize without losing its essence. In its streets you will find traditional shops and the best gastronomy, because in its bars and restaurants you will discover the exquisite flavor of this neighborhood.
When you walk along Paseo de La Concha you already sense that the Antiguo has to be a special area. And at the top of the watchtower that enters the neighborhood, the Miramar Palace welcomes you.
To access the Antiguo through Paseo de la Concha you must cross a small tunnel called Miramart located under Pico del Loro. A passage that will immerse you in an underwater world. Thanks to its decoration it will seem that you are walking along the bottom of the Cantabrian Sea.
And when you leave the tunnel, you will find Ondarreta beach. Protected by Mount Igeldo and Santa Clara Island, Ondarreta is the ideal place to bathe and have a fun time among blue-and-white awnings that give it a unique touch.
No two neighborhoods are the same in Donostia / San Sebastián. Each one has its essence. But there is one with a special magic and a unique landscape, because it is the only one that has a beach, a Palace and an underwater tunnel.
And if you don't want to step on the sand, you can walk along the promenade full of gardens that surrounds it. A walk that borders La Concha Bay and will take you to the Peine del Viento, a magical place, where you can sit and watch the sea or play at running away from its attacks.
Here, the waves jump between the spikes of the three sculptures creating a spectacular landscape. But the water and the wind, always so playful, will not be satisfied with trying to get you wet by jumping over the small wall. They will wait patiently, and when you least expect it they will sneak through the holes in the floor to come out in the form of a geyser and make you smile. Remember that the photo with the water coming out of the holes cannot be missing.
And after this fun time, go to the slopes of Monte Igueldo and get on the funicular that will immerse you in the past. After a pleasant trip on this 1912 cogwheel train with spectacular views, you will arrive at a vintage amusement park, one of which no longer exists.
A place where children will have a great time, you will return to your childhood, ride attractions from another era, laugh in front of mirrors with impossible reflections, fly on magic carpets and get excited on Swiss mountains suspended over the sea.
After climbing Mount Igueldo, it is time to return to the Old Town and wander through its bowels, where you will find touches of tradition and modernity. A wide street, Avenida de Tolosa, allows you to cross the Antiguo from Ondarreta beach to the Universities area.
Be sure to look at all the side streets of this avenue because in them you will find gardens, parks and squares full of San Sebastian life. And, above all, you will find a large number of bars and restaurants to savor the fantastic pintxos and San Sebastian cuisine.
By bus, bike, walking or riding. The options you have to get from any point in San Sebastián or even from outside the city to the Antiguo are very varied. By public transport by bike, or taking a pleasant walk, choose the option that most appeals to you.
If you are in San Sebastián you can take the city buses. Blue and green in color and with the name Dbus, you should pay attention to the number and the stops it makes. For example, lines that have a stop at Ondarreta, Universidades, Av. Tolosa or Benta Berri pass through Antiguo and will take you closer to your destination.
But if you want some advice, we encourage you to rent a bike or enjoy the charm of the city on foot. Donostia has a network of roads prepared so you can explore the city by pedaling. And, in addition, you have the option of renting electric bicycles, so you can tour the Antiguo without getting tired.
And if walking is your thing, this neighborhood awaits you with wide sidewalks and pedestrian areas surrounded by gardens that will make the path a most pleasant walk.
