The island of Oléron is a jewel of the Atlantic Ocean enjoying exceptional sunshine throughout the year. Second metropolitan island in surface after Corsica, the island is divided into several communes with each its own atmosphere. Dolus d'Oléron is located in the south of the island. It has the particularity of being present both on the east and west coasts of Oleron, which results in a great diversity of fine sandy beaches on both sides of the island. This charming little town is famous for its magnificent and varied natural heritage.
The island of Oléron is indeed located on the territories of the National Nature Reserve of Moëze-Oléron as well as on the Marine Natural Park of the Gironde estuary. A great fauna and flora live peacefully on its lands and off its coasts. Dolus d'Oléron gives you the opportunity to discover some of its fauna in animal parks aiming to protect incredible species. Founded in 1982, the Bird Marsh is a natural area of 50 hectares dedicated to the protection of animals in distress. There are nearly 200 different species. Once treated, the majority of them regain their freedom. A real hospital, this conservation centre also welcomes visitors in a 10 hectare discovery park where you can admire species and learn about animal protection. From the observatory, you also enjoy an unobstructed view of all the marshes.
At Myocastor Park, you come to discover an animal that comes from far away : the ragondin, also called the swamp beaver ! Native to South America, this predominantly nocturnal species lives in freshwater aquatic environments. This small park is particularly delightful for toddlers who will love getting to know this touching animal. After some explanations from a specialist, a feeding session for myocastors allows you to get closer to this unknown species. You can even take them on your lap for a photo or simply pet their coat !
During the summer, the Ileo water park is a must. In addition to its superb swimming pools dedicated to sport, relaxation and leisure, the complex also opens its outdoor areas during the summer season. Wave pools, inflatable structures, rivers with buoys, artificial surf waves and the eternal slides... Full of sensational attractions that will delight young and old alike !
