Looking for nature and the outdoors? Green landscapes as far as the eye can see, unspoilt panoramas and authenticity? Direction Saint-Maurice d'Ibie, in Ardèche.
In the heart of the southern Ardèche, Saint-Maurice d'Ibie owes its name to the river that flows through it. Just a few kilometres from Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and the meanders of the Ardèche, Saint-Maurice d'Ibie is located on the hills of the limestone valley of the same name, planted with vines and lavender. It is a delight to stroll along the village's narrow streets: studded with old houses of river stone character, you can also observe superb vaulted passages, a splendid 11th century Romanesque church, arcaded houses and old bread ovens, especially on the side of the hamlet of Salèlles.
One site attracts the attention of visitors every year: the "hole in the moon". Remained very wild, this magical place is actually a kind of rupture in the riverbed, which naturally created a small waterfall. At the foot of the latter, you will discover a magnificent clear water point, ideal for swimming on hot summer days.
Historically, the Saint-Maurice d'Ibie sector is dotted with many decorated caves, among the most beautiful in France. If there is one to visit absolutely? The Chauvet Cave, no doubt about it. A true Mecca of prehistoric times, famous for its hundreds of cave paintings, this thousand-year-old cave cannot be visited in order to be preserved. However, you will still have the opportunity to explore its exact replica, called the "Caverne du Pont d'Arc", for a return to the origins of man and the first artistic works. The Grotte de Saint-Marcel (in Bidon), but also the amazing Grand Site de l'Aven d'Orgnac (32 kilometres away), the cirque de Gens, the banks of the neighbouring Rhône, the château de Saint-Montan (45 minutes by car), but also Montélimar la gourmande and its famous castle, a Romanesque fortress overlooking the banks of the Ardèche and the Rhône are to be added to your list of things to visit during your holidays in Saint-Maurice d' Ibie.
But if there is a place that attracts crowds all year round, it is certainly the neighbouring village of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc: at the gates of the magnificent Gorges de l'Ardèche National Nature Reserve, Vallon-Pont-d'Arc excels in the art of making its visitors succumb thanks to its wonderful setting. With its caves, hiking trails that will lead you along paths with enchanting panoramas, its beaches on the banks of the Ardèche and its famous excursions along the meanders of the capricious river, Vallon-Pont-d'Arc has everything to please. Hiking and climbing enthusiasts will enjoy trails across the cliffs, while water sports fans will have plenty to choose from to occupy their afternoons: rafting, kayaking, canoeing, paddle, speed-riding, hydrospeed, white water swimming... For refreshing moments in the heart of postcard landscapes, which you will remember for a long time. There's a good chance you'll be back in Saint-Maurice d'Ibie!
There is nothing to do in Saint Maurice d'Ibie. It's an isolated village where there's nothing to see.
