Established on both sides of the Lot, Saint-Geniez impresses its visitors with its rich architecture. Saint-Geniez-d'Olt, one of the most important towns in Rouergue in the 18th century, owes its success to its drapery which, during the Middle Ages, contributed to its regional development. As you stroll through the city, around a charming alleyway, you may come across its cloister and chapel of the Augustinians of the 15th and 17th centuries, but also its magnificent 17th century mansions and its parish church, dating from the 11th century.
Once frequented by thinkers, authors and philosophers of the Age of Enlightenment, Saint-Geniez perpetuates its role as a cultural capital throughout the year, thanks to its concerts, dance and musical performances, as well as its traditional festivals.
In addition to its undeniable historical attractions, Saint-Geniez-d'Olt is the ideal place for outdoor sports lovers. Hiking is certainly the most popular activity in the village: thanks to its geographical location between the immense plateaus of Aubrac and the Causses, Saint-Geniez will allow both novice and experienced walkers to enjoy a number of excursions in its hills. If there is one itinerary that cannot be ignored in Saint-Geniez, it is the "Vaysseries" itinerary. This 4 km long family itinerary is perfect to discover some of the most beautiful panoramas of Saint-Geniez-d'Olt, as well as superb views of the Aubrac foothills. Through the undergrowth surrounding the town, the "Barribès Health Trail" is also not to be missed: along the stream, this itinerary will allow you to observe the old tannery workshops of yesteryear as well as beautiful landscapes on the surrounding valleys. The refreshing "Pessoles" trail (7.5 kilometres) and the "Bois de Combetalade" trail (11 kilometres) are also worth doing if you are a hiker. The most sporty can try the "Parcours des Monts d'Aubrac" (19 kilometres) and the "Monts d'Aubrac au Lot" itinerary via Aurelle (22 kilometres): these rather intense routes through the mountains will offer you magnificent views of the Haut Rouergue and its flower fields. On the cycling side, Saint-Geniez and its region will offer you many cycling tours for all levels. With its loops and routes ranging from 36 to 101 kilometres, the "Marmotte d'Olt" is the most popular cycling sport in Aveyron. But the youngest ones and Sunday cyclists will also be able to enjoy much shorter itineraries through the city and its surroundings, for small country and family getaways.
In addition to hiking, cycling and horseback riding, Saint-Geniez-d'Olt is the perfect place to fish, as well as for a wide range of whitewater sports on the Lot: canoeing, kayaking, rafting, SUP, paddle, hydrospeed, boat or giant paddle will give you plenty of refreshing sensations! Climbing enthusiasts can do accrobranche or via corda, a vertical hike along the rocks that will surely impress you. Fishing enthusiasts will be able to enjoy the many rivers of the Lot Valley to fish for carp, pike-perch and trout, in settings preserved with great biodiversity.
Finally, how can we avoid succumbing to the flavours of local gastronomy? A jewel of French gastronomy and the pride of Aveyron, aligot is the typical dish of Aubrac. Cheese soup, spit cake, "Sannié" strawberries and Aubrac beef complete the picture of local flavours that you should absolutely taste during your stay in Saint-Geniez-d'Olt.
