At the gates of the Calanques National Park, La Ciotat invites you in an exceptional natural setting to enjoy all the softness of the Mediterranean. Near the city centre, the fine sandy beaches are ideal for sunbathing, swimming and many activities : kayaking, water skiing, surfing, kitesurfing, paddle... If you prefer a slightly wilder environment, join a small sheltered cove and discover fabulous underwater environments while diving. Sailing enthusiasts can also devote themselves to their favourite activity by going to the marina where several clubs offer courses or boat hire.
City of history and culture, La Ciotat also invites you to pleasant walks to discover its heritage. Follow in the footsteps of the Lumière brothers, for example, who made one of the very first films in film history in this beautiful city : "The arrival of a train at La Ciotat station". See the Château du Clos des Plages, summer residence of the brothers, and the Eden Theatre, the oldest cinema still open where the Lumière organised a screening in 1895. Then walk along the pedestrian streets of the old town which will reveal pleasant surprises : small squares, sculpted doors dating from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, gardens, old chapels... Among these, take the time to visit the chapel of the Blue Penitents, built in 1626 and classified as a historical monument.
In its magnificent natural setting, La Ciotat will surely encourage you to go on many hikes. Several paths along the coast will allow you to discover exceptional sites such as the calanque and the Mugel park, the calanque of Figuerolles, the promontory of the Notre-Dame chapel and the red ochre cliff which rises more than 300 meters above sea level at the level of the semaphore of the Bec de l'Aigle. After a busy day, treat yourself to one of La Ciotat's good restaurants and taste the delicious recipes of Provence : tapenade, pistou soup, aïoli, bouillabaisse, provençal stew...
