The most southern of the 15 Ponant islands, the Isle of Aix is a real jewel. Between nature, culture, history and escape, the Ile d'Aix and its eponymous village are definitely a privileged place for those who dream of island holidays, and without cars.

A village in its own right on the island of the same name, Île-d'Aix is located off the Fouras peninsula, just east of the island of Oléron. The smallest commune in the department of Charente-Maritime, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, this former property of the monks of Cluny is renowned as much for the magnificence of its natural heritage as for its precious buildings. Labelled as a "Village de Pierres et d'Eau" (Stone and Water Village), Île-d'Aix can be visited on foot, in a horse-drawn carriage or by bicycle thanks to the numerous cycle paths, which have made the bicycle the preferred means of transport for visitors to the island. Fortified by Vauban, the commune of Île-d'Aix has preserved many testimonies of its past that you can discover. The scene of an important battle between Napoleon and the English troops in 1809, Île-d'Aix is also the place where Napoleon stayed before his exile to Saint Helena. Also, to learn all about Napoleon and his history with the village, head to the Napoleonic Museum, housed in the former house of the latter, which houses a large collection of objects that belonged to the emperor, and tracing his history. If you like museums, note also the presence of the Maison de la Nacre on the territory of Île-d'Aix, which tells the history of the mother-of-pearl in the town through many magnificent collections.

In terms of buildings, Île-d'Aix still gives a glimpse of its past as a defensive centre, thanks to the many forts that you can admire during your excursions. From the Fort de la Rade to the Fort Liédot (very popular with hikers), not forgetting the unmissable Fort Boyard located between the Isle of Aix and the Isle of Oleron, there are many military monuments dotted around the commune of Île-d'Aix. On the religious side, it is the church of Saint-Martin that is worth a visit: a remnant of an 11th century priory, even though it has been partly destroyed, it is worth visiting for the singular beauty of its vaulting which rests on fourteen columns, making this building one of the finest examples of Romanesque art in Saintonge. On the town side, the Town Hall of Ile-d'Aix, but also the Montalembert barracks, without forgetting the small houses emblematic of the local landscape made of tiled roofs and coloured shutters, dwellings as if taken from the most beautiful postcards of the region decorated with fragrant hollyhocks, are not to be missed.

The Isle of Aix is also an immeasurable richness on the sea side. To discover all the splendour of its coastline, you can take a path, the Tour de l'Île, which in two hours will allow you to discover all the most beautiful beaches and creeks of this tiny island, without forgetting the lighthouse of the Île-d'Aix, an astonishing lighthouse with two 25-metre-high towers, which from its summit allows you to appreciate an incomparable panorama of the island and the open sea. If the mountain bike trails are numerous, so are the pedestrian itineraries that will lead you tirelessly towards the Pointe Sainte-Eulard, the Pointe de Coudepont, the Pointe du Parc, or the Pointe Sainte-Catherine. On the beach side, the Anse de la Croix and the Jeamblet beaches will be perfect for perfecting your tan, for your swimming sessions or for beautiful walks with your feet in the water at sunset.
