In the Gers, in the Occitanie region, if there is one destination that will be perfect for those seeking calm and authenticity, it is certainly Estang.
Between the stone hillsides of the Gers and the thick steppes of the neighbouring moors, Estang, commune of Armagnac, blossoms in the heart of a generous, fertile nature, made up of vineyards as far as the eye can see, elegant oaks and fragrant tall pines perched high up in the shade of the alleys that outline the village. Nicknamed the "Bas Armagnac" because of its geographical location at the bottom of the hills, the last of their line before the Landes sand, Estang is the country holiday of your dreams. Many times modified over the centuries, the scene of clashes and looting, the village preserves from its past some beautiful sites that you will have to visit. Starting with its church! Built in the 13th century, it boasts a splendid Romanesque choir and Gothic extensions, as well as a magnificent rose window on the south transept side. After visiting Notre-Dame d'Estang, head for the Holy Fountain; healer and surrounded by legends, reputed to cure digestive problems and liver diseases, it is today one of the springs that supply the town with drinking water. After a tour of the convent chapel, the old wash house and the Château de Castex d'Armagnac, you will reach the Estang bullring. The Arènes Jean Barthelote, that's their name, date back to 1901; built for the Landes race, they host many events throughout the year, including at least 5 Landes races which delight both amateurs and visitors curious to discover this local tradition.
An inspiring, restful destination, the commune is equipped with perfect hiking trails to allow you to discover all its secrets. Circuit n°1 is 6.6 kilometres long, the second is 7.1 kilometres long, and the last one is 12.9 kilometres long and will lead you through the village and its neighbouring valleys for a quiet discovery at your own pace. A must? Lake Courtès for a refreshing break, or Lake Uby 11 kilometres further north. While its banks are ideal for hiking, horse riding or cycling, it also has a leisure park with games for children, picnic areas and a water sports centre from which you can opt for a boat ride on the lake, a paddle, kayak or pedal boat session, and a swimming pool for paddling in complete tranquillity. The bastide town of Armagnac (12 kilometres away) is worth a visit for the immeasurable charm of its old medieval flowered streets, as is the spa town of Barbotan-les-Thermes (10 kilometres away). Renowned for its rheumatology and phlebology treatments, it attracts spa visitors and holidaymakers in search of a wellness break, and is well worth the detour for its splendid botanical gardens!
