Just opposite the Gironde estuary, on the tip of Grave, is a place where immense beaches, forests, vineyards, hiking trails and marshes cohabit in harmony to create an absolutely magnificent village. An appointment adored by holidaymakers in search of tranquillity and nature, Le Verdon-sur-Mer is an ideal holiday destination for relaxing and exotic stays.
Thanks to its triangular shape, the commune of Verdon-sur-Mer has many advantages, including its two façades facing the sea : the first faces the Gironde estuary while the second faces the Atlantic Ocean. Almost totally dedicated to maritime activities, Le Verdon-sur-Mer is a port city, famous for its harbour sheltered from the west winds and its 4 large bridges. It is also home to two marshes (the Councillor's and Logit's marshes), and salt marshes, which are one of the city's main activities. You will not be able to stay at Verdon-sur-Mer without visiting (or at least seeing !) the famous Cordouan lighthouse : erected at the confluence of the Garonne and the Dordogne, on a rocky plateau at the mouth of the Gironde estuary (7 km from the centre of Verdon-sur-Mer), this guarded lighthouse has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1862. The oldest still operating lighthouse in France, it is sometimes nicknamed the "Versailles de la mer" or the "King of Lighthouses". You can visit it by boat and enjoy a breathtaking view of the ocean from its 311 steps. Another lighthouse to visit is Grave, located on the tip of the same name. Dating from the middle of the 19th century, the Grave Lighthouse houses a museum dedicated to lighthouses and their history, perfect for understanding how they function and the life of the keepers.
Extending as far as Soulac-sur-Mer, the ocean beach of Verdon-sur-Mer (also called "Plage Saint Nicolas") is the only supervised ocean beach in the seaside resort. Spreading as far as the eye can see towards the ocean, its wide sandbank isolated from any construction is admirably preserved. Wild and lined with dunes, the "Plage des Cantines" is a delight for holidaymakers seeking peace and quiet and naturist lovers. Finally, the "Grave Beach", wild and less frequented, offers beautiful views over the Cordouan Lighthouse and the Santiago de Compostela road. Côté estuaire de la Gironde, is the "Plage Chambrette" : very popular with the families who come to bathe there (here, the water is less agitated than on the ocean side), it will offer you superb points of view on the port and the nearby Charentais beaches. You will find a nautical centre, as well as cycle paths along its seafront, ideal for sunset walks.
Several choices are offered to you to enjoy the nautical pleasures. Lovers of sea excursions can rent a boat and anchor from Port-Médoc in the direction of Royan or Lacanau for days dedicated to exploring the Atlantic coast and estuary. As for sports, along the coast, many activities are offered on the Verdon beaches : sailing, towed buoys, windsurfing, paddle, surfing, jet skiing, flyboarding, dinghy, optimist or catamaran training courses... Something to conquer the hearts of young and old. Don't panic if you don't have a sea foot, the coastline can also be discovered on horseback, on foot or by bike as it is dotted with a multitude of marked paths, such as the GR 8 (which runs along the Aquitaine coast) and the route du littoral Atlantique (EV 1). Through the maritime pines, the arbutus trees, the holm oaks and the dunes, you will discover all the splendours of the local fauna and flora, as well as magnificent panoramas on the coast and the beaches of Verdon-sur-Mer.
Finally, in terms of gastronomy, you can take advantage of the nearby Charente-Maritime to taste delicious local dishes based on fish, Marennes-Oléron oysters, Bordeaux wines, melons and seafood that will surely delight your taste buds.

Nice visits to make by bike. Take the ferry to Royan. Visit the caves of Meschers, Talmon. The lighthouse, Cordouan by boat. Boat trip and discovery of the Gironde Estuary. Richard's lighthouse, St Nicolas lighthouse. Soulac. The Médoc in the middle of the grape harvest. Restaurant "La Pêcherie", "Le Face à Fac" in Verdon, "La Caravelle" in Meschers.

Calm sea at 5 km supervised. Otherwise Atlantic Ocean (waves) at Soulac. Leclerc supermarket in the city centre and where there is a fishmonger with fish of the day in the car park! Very good and fresh.
