Close your eyes and imagine: the sun setting on the Thau lagoon, the warmth on your skin, and the calm of a gentle summer evening... Are you there? Open your eyes, you have arrived in Mèze! A small village in the Hérault, in the Occitanie region, it is close to Frontignan, Sète and Agde, offering a dream setting for a Mediterranean holiday.
Right on the banks of the Thau Lagoon, in the heart of the Sète Agglopôle Méditerranée agglomeration community, Mèze was founded in the 6th century BC by the Phocaeans, just like its (almost) neighbour Agde. For a long time prosperous thanks to fishing and agriculture, the commune nestled between scrubland, lakes and vineyards opened up to maritime trade in the 6th century before turning to oyster and shellfish farming, and recently seeing tourists flock to it for authentic and peaceful holidays. Perfect for a quiet stroll, the old medieval village of Mèze is home to a whole host of relics to be discovered, such as the Château de Girard, the Creyssels farm, and the many churches and chapels that adorn the village. If one of them is worth the detour, it is without question the church of Saint-Martin-de-Caux. Built during the 12th century right on the edge of the Cami Roumieu, which pilgrims used to take on their way to Santiago de Compostela, this Romanesque church, a former stronghold of Antiquity, is known to have housed a good number of Gallo-Roman remains and is worth a visit for its decorations. After discovering the 15th century Saint-Hilaire church and admiring its defensive bell tower, or the Penitents chapel on the edge of the Thau lake, it is impossible not to take a look at the ramparts, situated below the chapel. Adjacent to the historic centre of Mèze, they were destroyed in 736 before being finally rebuilt in the 9th century; you can now discover the remains, and stroll along the Thau lake at the same time. From the marina (with its 125 berths) to the port of the nacelles, the whole identity of Mèze will unfold before your eyes! The latter is the oldest in the town; with its 73 berths for fishing boats and 50 berths for pleasure boats, it is the ideal place to chat in the sunset, before going to one of the many restaurants in the village.
Ah, Mèze and its little restaurants... What would the village be without its gastronomy? Rich and tasty, the local cuisine is one of the stars of your holidays in Mèze. You will be able to taste a lot of dishes based on shellfish and other sea products, such as the unavoidable tielle, a pie stuffed with octopus and squid. Macaroonade, mussels with brasucade, Bouzigues oysters and other flavoured dishes will complete this gourmet discovery. And finally, what would you say to a break on the beach after all that? Ideal for sunbathing, swimming and water sports such as kitesurfing, the lake beaches such as the neighbouring beaches of Sète and Agde along the Mediterranean will be absolutely perfect for a well-deserved break in the sun.
