Located in the heart of the Hautes-Alpes, Briançon is a charming little town with a remarkable historical heritage. Perched at an altitude of 1326 metres, it brilliantly combines the charm of an alpine village with the dynamism of a tourist resort.
Briançon is above all a city of history. Its immense fortifications, composed of ramparts surrounding the city and military buildings, were built by the illustrious Vauban. The Sun King's favourite military engineer built this defence complex during the 18th century, which protected the city and watched over the road to Italy. A large part of these fortifications have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2008. Don't miss the majestic forts that surround the city. At an altitude of 1604 metres, the Fort du Randouillet overlooks the valley. Built between 1724 and 1734, its purpose was to prevent any passage on the Durance River. A little further down, nestled on a plateau of the same name, the Fort des Têtes occupies a strategic position that ensured the defence of a large part of the territory. It is the Asfeld Bridge, built by Vauban's successors, that connects this fort to Briançon. From its vertiginous height, adventurers at heart will be able to experience thrills during a bungee jumping over the Durance.
Briançon is also a city known for its many sporting activities. It is the home town of the "Diables Rouges", the ice hockey team that won the French Cup in 2014. The René-Froger ice rink has hosted many sporting events such as the 2001 and 2004 World Figure Skating Championships. Since 1990, Briançon has also been a winter sports resort of the Serre-Chevalier estate. Created in 1941, the estate extends over 250 kilometres and offers a wide range of sports. Its 103 ski slopes delight a large number of holidaymakers every year. It's not just for ski enthusiasts. Sled dogs, snowshoe hikes, ice climbing... We won't miss the Déval'Bob, a 4 km long toboggan run through the larch trees. A good way for non-skiers to discover, in a magnificent setting, the joys of skiing in complete safety! In summer, the resort of Briançon is still as active as ever. The mountain bike is particularly well known with many trails and structures dedicated specifically to its use.
