If there is one destination in the Lot that holidaymakers love, it is undoubtedly Padirac. Cultural and exotic, it fascinates and amazes both young and old every year. Ready for a stay you will remember? Let's get going!
The village of Padirac is located in the north of the Regional Natural Park of the Causses du Quercy, 15 kilometres from Rocamadour. In the department of Lot, in the Occitanie region, Padirac flourishes in the heart of the Causse de Gramat, about sixty kilometres from Cahors. Occupied for thousands of years, Padirac is known throughout the world for its chasm, its famous abyss which fascinates and arouses curiosity beyond the borders of France. Considered one of the country's most striking geological curiosities, this large cavity, 33 metres in diameter, plunges into the heart of the earth at 103 metres below sea level. At a depth of 103 metres, a river flows through it, preserved, clear, marvellous, which fascinates by its colours and its crystalline side. To reach it, you will have to go down by a lift or via a staircase for the brave ones, then climb on small boats to discover the splendour of the place to the rhythm of the water. Then, on foot, you will discover the Rainy Lake Hall, known for housing the Pendeloque, an absolutely enormous stalactite which makes the place famous, followed by the Great Courts Hall (and its magnificent lake) and the Grand Dome Hall, which impresses with its 94-metre high vault. Strange shapes and bodies of water will undoubtedly make this visit memorable! Our advice: don't forget to cover up, it's rather chilly down there!
In addition to its splendid chasm, Padirac invites passing visitors to discover its rich heritage, and very old since the town has a vast megalithic heritage. During your walks, you will discover the dolmens of Bougoulat, Andrieu, Pendus, Calcas, the dolmen of Escurettes or those of Claouzettes. The Museum of Insects is worth a visit, as is the church of Saint-Julien or the castle of Padirac.
The town and the Lot region, dotted with hiking trails, are an endless invitation to get away from it all. Whether you are on foot, on horseback or by bike, many sites are worth the detour. At your "to do list" of holidays, Rocamadour is a must to do! A medieval town on a cliffside, it fascinates visitors with its famous Black Virgin, its tomb of Saint-Amadour, its crypt, its basilica Saint-Sauveur (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site)... and its cheese! Cahors, capital of the Lot and its famous Pont Valentré, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Lacave, its course of the Dordogne, its marvellous castle and its caves (22 kilometres to the east) will complete your stay in Padirac!
