What a pleasure to stay in Normandy, don't you think? Its wide open spaces, its beaches, its countryside, its heritage, its delicacies, everything, absolutely everything here makes you want to pack your bags. Feel like trying the adventure? Head for Portbail, in the Channel!
On the Côte des Isles, in the Cotentin region, Portbail (or Port-Bail, depending on what you prefer!) fascinates you with the very special splendour of its panoramas. Known to the initiated, spared by mass tourism, Portbail is a real little paradise on earth for nature lovers. Captivating, its haven lives and flourishes with the tides, offering visitors ever-changing landscapes, each one more beautiful than the next. On one side of the harbour, the dunes to the south, and the grasslands, fertile areas where pre-salted lambs quietly graze, located on the north side. With the help of hiking trails, walkers, cyclists and other riders can set off to discover the harbourfront and its fauna and flora!
An ancient trading port dating from the Gallo-Roman period, this "little estuary" of the Cotentin region is home to a heritage full of charm; its narrow streets, authentic Normandy streets dotted with elegant residences with a recognisable cachet, can be visited hand in hand for a bucolic stroll to discover the secrets of Portbail. If you take the time to get lost in the town, you will discover its two churches, located about a hundred metres from each other. Although the church of Saint-Martin de Gouey is still in use, the church of Notre-Dame, on the edge of the harbour, now hosts numerous exhibitions throughout the year. Particularly elegant although rather massive, it is distinguished by its fortified crenellated bell tower crowned with machicolations that can be seen almost everywhere in town. In addition to these buildings, you can also visit the listed 16th century Château du Dick with its Renaissance chimney, and the 1873 bridge which tirelessly leads holidaymakers to the beach thanks to its 13 arches. Its little extra? During high tides, the water climbs up to the level of the bridge, giving the impression of walking on water and causing pretty photographs with the Notre-Dame church just behind!
Ah, the beach, yes, it is indeed the major asset of Portbail. Long, splendid, dynamic, the beaches that dot the coast of Portbail are a small paradise for all sportsmen and other water sports enthusiasts who can enjoy a whole host of activities. From the beach of the Dunes to the Semaphore beach, sand yachting, coastal sailing, horse riding along the seafront, swimming, sand castle competitions are legion... In short, the ingredients of the perfect recipe for a wonderful holiday in a preserved setting!
