Covering an ancient crater, it offers an ideal setting for walking, swimming and boat trips. Smaller, Lake Vico, near Capranica, is no less charming with its natural reserve of beech, chestnut and oak trees.

This spa town, with its rich past, is renowned for the beauty of its Este and Hadrian villas, both of which are listed as Unesco World Heritage Sites. To the west of Rome, you can also visit the wonderful Etruscan sites of Cerveteri and Tarquinia and the National Archaeological Museum in the magnificent Palazzo Vitelleschi.
