To the south of Florence, the province of Siena is home to the most authentic landscapes of Tuscany. With its vineyards, gentle hills, forests and large farms surrounded by cypress trees, you will discover many beautiful places that seem timeless.
In the centre of the province, the city of Siena is one of the highlights of any stay in Tuscany. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its historic centre is a veritable open-air museum. Walking along its pretty medieval streets, you can admire the cathedral (Duomo di Siena), the San Domenico basilica, the Gaia Fountain, the Loggia della Mercanzia... Then visit the city's many museums such as the Museo Civico, housed in the superb Palazzo Publico, or the national art gallery. You can discover the works of the painters of the Sienese school such as Duccio di Buoninsegna, Stefano di Giovanni, Domenico di Bartolo...
If Siena leaves an unforgettable memory, many other towns and villages in the province deserve special attention. Discover, for example, Montepulciano which, behind its ramparts, hides countless jewels: the cathedral, the Tarugi palace, the Torre di Pucinella... Then go to San Gimignano, the city of the Towers, also surrounded by ramparts that protect the Romanesque-Gothic church Sant'Agostino (13th century), the Palazzo del Popolo and the 12th century collegiate church, famous for its frescoes of Taddeo di Bartolo. But also visit Asciano (college, abbey), Casole d'Elsa for its magnificent historical centre and Castelnuovo Berardenga for its enchanting setting in the Tuscan countryside.
After these city escapades, treat yourself to long walks in the green, in sumptuous landscapes. The province of Siena has 14 nature reserves crossed by paths that allow hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding. Visit, for example, the Pietraporciana reserve and its immense beech forest. But also discover the paths of the Chianti region and walk through vineyards, olive groves, oak and chestnut forests. On the way, enjoy the Romanesque churches and fortified castles of the many medieval villages and take a break at Gaiole in Chianti to admire Brolio Castle and taste the divine local drinks. At the end of the day, take the time to taste the tasty local specialities : pici, ribollita, grills, pecorino, minestraccia, Vin Noble de Montepulciano...
