After a few moments of idleness or activities by the sea, discover the wealth of Maltese cities. In the heart of the capital, Valletta or Valletta, enjoy the fortified city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by the Knights of Malta, it has a completely squared plan. Walking its maze of streets, you can admire the co-cathedral of St. John, the palace of the Grand Masters, the hostel of Castile, built in the sixteenth century, but also recent monuments such as the grand staircase, the open-air theatre and the parliament, designed by architect Renzo Piano.
Near Valletta, visit also the three cities of Bormla, Senglea and Birgu. Also founded by the Knights, they are often considered as the historic cradle of the island. Birgu is home to the famous Fort St Angelo, which withstood the Great Siege of the Ottomans in 1565. Then discover the megalithic temples of Ggantija and the Hypogée of Hal Safliéni, a monumental complex of underground rooms built on three levels between 4000 and 2000 years BC. But also take advantage of your stay to fall under the spell of the seaside resorts of San Pawl il Bahar and San Gijan. Both have countless restaurants where you can taste the local specialties: fish pie, kapunata, bragioli, goat cheese, pastizzi, kannoli...
