Located in the very south of Spain, in the province of Almeria, Roquetas de Mar is one of the most popular seaside resorts in the Gulf of Almeria. An ideal holiday destination for a change of scenery, the municipality unrolls immense beaches of fine sand along its magnificent coastline.
Roquetas de Mar is first of all a 100% sunny destination. With its beaches labelled Pavillon Bleu, the resort attracts every year vacationers envious of lounging on its fine sand. The beaches of "Aguadulce" and "Uzbanizacion" are the longest and most popular in Roquetas de Mar: bordered by a pleasant walk, they are very popular with water sports enthusiasts. You can dive, surf, windsurf or kite surf at your leisure. Further on, the beach of "Cerrillos" is a small, calm and preserved cocoon, away from the crowd of the central beaches. Located on the edge of Punta Entinas Sabinar, it is in a protected environment, ideal for long breaks of idleness but also for beautiful walks at sunset. The beach of "La Bajadilla" is well adapted to families thanks to its shallow and rather calm waters, just like the beach of "La Romanilla". Finally, the "Las Salinas" and "Los Banos" are better known for their sliding sports spots, which attract amateur and experienced sportsmen every year.
But Roquetas de Mar is also a cultural destination, admirable for its architectural and natural richness, of which only Andalusia seems to have the secret. So take the time to visit its historic district: once a small fishing port, this district of tangled alleys is a real labyrinth dotted with restaurants, bistros and terraces where we strongly recommend you sit down to enjoy the calm and picturesque charms of this city... while tasting its iodized flavours! On the menu? Fish of course, in tapas, fried or in delicious little simmered dishes, but also chickpeas (in soup), "Migas Andaluzas", "bocas de la Isla", "aceitunas" pâté and gazpacho, a refreshing soup very popular during hot summer weather. Once your stomach is full, head for the most famous monument in Roquetas de Mar: the Castillo de Santa Ana. Located on the heights of the Santa Ana mountain, far from the hustle and bustle of the seaside, this well-preserved building dates back to the 16th century. Hosting concerts, shows, art exhibitions and conferences throughout the year, it is open to visitors free of charge. Thanks to the many hiking trails that cross Roquetas de Mar, it will be possible to reach the resort's lighthouse, which faces the coast, in a few minutes. You can also visit one of the most beautiful natural sites in the province: Punta Entinas-Sabinar. Located west of Roquetas, this Natural Reserve is a real paradise for migratory birds: you can observe seagulls, waders, herons and magnificent pink flamingos. We particularly recommend the Cerrillo Salt Works trail at sunset, where you can admire the birds flying in the splendour of the sky colours reflected in the park's lagoons.
Finally Roquetas de Mar is also appreciated for its golf course, "Playa Serena Golf Club", which attracts golf aficionados every year. With its 18 holes and beautiful courses, it offers splendid views of the Almeria desert, the mountains and the coast.
