Nestled in the Hautes-Alpes, at the end of the Durance valley, Embrun Serre-Ponçon is a dynamic town of 6000 inhabitants. Situated at an altitude of 860 metres, between high mountains and plains, it is bordered by majestic peaks culminating at over 2000 metres. Embrun is a very heterogeneous destination. Sport, nature, relaxation... your choice !

Embrun was established on the site of an oppidum that watched over the river Durance and long ago was the capital of the Caturiges. This little Celtic people nestled in the Hautes-Alpes is not the only one to have taken up residence in this territory. The city has had a very eventful history over the centuries. It belongs sometimes to one county, sometimes to another, and this throughout the Middle Ages. During the religious wars, Lesdiguières, a Protestant leader, seized the city and temporarily made it its capital. These many changes have made the city today a peaceful landmark of buildings steeped in history.

Embrun's unmissable monument is without a doubt Notre-Dame du Réal Cathedral. It was once one of the most important monuments in the Alps, because of its position on an important passageway. Pilgrims on their way to the Roman papacy stopped regularly there. A mixture of Gothic and Romanesque styles, it proudly dominates the city. At present, it is no longer officially a cathedral but a church of the diocese of Gap. It houses the museum of sacred art in the Chapelle Sainte-Anne. There are real treasures of religious art : priestly vestments, liturgical ornaments, gold thread borders, precious fabrics...

Embrun Serre-Ponçon is also sport in the middle of nature! Winter sports lovers are delighted by the proximity of several quality resorts. The choice is wide and very varied from the city. You can go to Les Orres, a large resort with an international reputation, or prefer smaller family resorts like Crévoux. Skiing is within reach in Embrun.

Embrun owes much of its reputation to the Serre-Ponçon Lake. Located at the foot of the peaks, the surroundings of the lake have been developed to offer many outdoor activities. Lazing around with the mountains in the background, do you feel like it ? Go to the lake to have fun with your family : water sports in the aquapark, young and old will find their happiness. It is the perfect place to relax in front of grandiose landscapes or have lunch in one of the surrounding restaurants. A few kilometres from Embrun, the beach of Chanterenne extends over the commune of Crots. This is a real sandy beach in the mountains, perfect for swimming or relaxing.
