Adored by connoisseurs, Brest, also called the "Cité du Ponant", is one of the most beautiful cities in Finistère. The second largest agglomeration in the Brittany region, this young and dynamic destination is the perfect place for a holiday by the sea, blending nature, history and culture.
Ah, Brest... Captivating, exciting, Brest is one of those cities where everything, absolutely everything has a history. Every nook and cranny of this city has a treasure trove of legends to tell. Quite extensive, the city can be visited on foot, but also by bicycle or tram. Destroyed largely as a result of bombing during the Second World War, Brest is a city of rather modern appearance. Its historic centre, which has been completely rebuilt, is an artery that is always on the move, well served in particular by the tram, where it is good to stroll and do a bit of shopping. But fortunately, some streets of Brest have been spared by the bombing, including the rue de Saint-Malo. Belonging to the Vieux-Brest, both authentic and captivating, it seduces with its atmosphere of yesteryear, and does not fail to attract visitors passing through Brest. It is also very close to one of the city's biggest attractions: its cable car. It is impossible to visit Brest without taking it at least once. Up there, from the cabin, a breathtaking panorama awaits you over a good part of Finistère, the city of Brest, the sea and the Rade.
Several sites are a must in Brest: the Château de la Marine, the oldest monument in the city, is one of them. Today converted into a museum, it reveals to its visitors masterpieces of naval art. Not far away, the Tour de la Motte-Tanguy is a must-see: with its splendid rooms and rich decorations, this treasure of history is as beautiful inside as it is outside. Built in the 14th century to watch over the entrance to the Penfeld, it is one of the rare witnesses of the ancient architecture of the town, and offers beautiful panoramas of the Rade de Brest. The harbour is one of the most popular sites in Brest. Stretching over more than 150 square kilometres, it is a privileged place for lovers of maritime history and water sports. You will be able to see a magnificent 19th century military ship, La Recouvrance, or even board a boat or sailboat to discover the harbour and the magnificence of the Breton coasts from the sea. Take a tour of the Capuchins, the modern lung and a tad "bobo" of Brest, which is home to numerous shops, cultural and artistic creation spaces. Visit Océanopolis with your family to contemplate the wealth of underwater fauna, stroll in the National Botanical Conservatory Garden renowned for its tropical greenhouses, or in the Explorers' Garden (where you can see magnificent hydrangeas!), and take a short cultural break at the Fine Arts Museum. Take the time to linger on the quays of the port, to taste mussels and chips, lobsters or galettes facing the sea: the second largest military port in France, it was created by Richelieu himself in a competition, before finally becoming nowadays the first marina in the Brittany region.
It is also impossible to visit Brest without visiting the Maison Blanche district, which is recognizable by its small fishermen's huts overlooking a pebble beach, and without... swimming! To discover all the most beautiful beaches of Brest and its metropolis, there is nothing better than hiking on the GR34, which runs along the entire coast and will allow you to discover a whole bunch of small splendid creeks. From the Moulin Blanc beach to the Trez-Hir beach, via the very family-friendly Sainte-Marguerite beach, the magnificent Sables Blancs beach and the Kersaint beach renowned for its endless views of the turquoise of the Mer d'Iroise, in all, 12 lively, wild or sporting beaches take place along the Brest coast.... You'll be spoilt for choice!
