98 kilometres from Nice and in the heart of the magnificent red gorges of Daluis, Guillaumes, dominated by the ruins of its former feudal castle, is the cultural capital of the Haut-Var. Inhabited by the imprint of its medieval past, this village is a delight for hikers and sports lovers in both winter and summer. A green resort adored by families, Guillaumes is ideally situated for both relaxing and exotic stays in all seasons, at the edge of the Mercantour National Park and the Valberg winter sports resort.
An ancient historical stronghold founded in the Middle Ages by William II on the road to the Col de la Cayolle, the village of Guillaumes shelters many vestiges of its past. His most precious treasure is certainly the most visible : it is his castle. Dominating the city, it was erected on a rocky spur during the 13th century before being fortified by Vauban in the 17th century. Château-donjon famous in the region, it is also called "château de la reine Jeanne", in reference to Jeanne de Provence. At the bend of its narrow streets punctuated with corbelled doors typical of local architecture (such as the rue des Troubadours), you will certainly cross the path of the remains of the old city walls, as well as a wash-house, an old wine press rue du Roi René, a flour mill, or lime kilns. Its parish church of Saint-Etienne decorated in a thousand colours, as well as the chapel of Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix and that of Sainte-Claire are among the religious buildings of the commune not to be missed during your visit.
But if Guillaumes is so famous, it is above all for its natural treasures. Vertiginous and amazing, the Daluis gorges are absolutely magnificent. Cut by the Var in the heart of wine-coloured rocks, the deep Daluis gorges, both spectacular and steep, are also called the "Colorado niçois". If you are a hiking enthusiast, this is the perfect place to go on an excursion ! During walks along the meanders of the Var or along its road in balcony, you will have access to landscapes really striking beauty, and during the summer you will also have the possibility of canyoning, rafting and bathing in its basins, in particular on the side of the waterfalls of Clue d'Amen. Le Pont de la Mariée is one of the most popular sites in the Daluis gorges : in addition to being magnificent, this site culminating 80 metres high above the Var is very popular with thrill-seekers who come here for bungee jumping.
During the winter, Guillaumes is the perfect place to settle down for a stay in the mountains. Directly connected to the ski resort of Valberg (one of its hamlets), Guillaumes attracts many skiers every year. You will be able to enjoy some 90 kilometres of ski slopes, loved by families who come to discover or rediscover the joys of snow in this "Famille Plus" resort. On the agenda ? Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snow golf, ice skating, snowmobiling, hiking, snowshoeing excursions in the heart of the larch forests, snow scooter, horseback riding, tobogganing, snowboarding... Finally, on sunny days, the resort is a delight for cyclists, fishermen, golfers, adventurers who love trail and tree climbing, as well as walkers. The mountain bike and the electric mountain bike (VTT AE) also have the coast during the summer period: with its 4 marked routes respectively 12, 23 and 42 kilometres long, the resort of Valberg will allow you to discover all the most beautiful landscapes of the Mercantour mountains dotted with high lakes, forests, meadows where ibexes, deer, chamois and wild boars live peacefully, as well as small picturesque villages in which you will adore strolling outdoors.

We ate in 2 farm hostels: one in Bouchanières and one in Sauze (we preferred the one in Bouchanières). Be careful to go to both places: the roads are very winding.
