Watered by the stream of Valletta, Aragon, a small Occitan town, definitely has everything to please. Just 15 kilometres from the famous city of Carcassonne, this small green paradise is the perfect place to spend your holidays if you like tranquility and old stones.
Calm: this is what marks when you arrive in Aragon. Set on its rocky spur in the heart of the Cabardès vineyard, this commune built in an amphitheatre takes place at the foot of the Montagne Noire. Former residence of the bishops of the Cathar country, Aragon, bathed in sunshine, will unfold before your amazed eyes its small, enclosed houses, most of which were built in medieval times. As for heritage, we advise you to discover the old village: the old 16th century castle, recognizable by its beautiful door and mullioned windows, is one of its oldest sites. Not far away, Sainte-Marie's church is also worth a visit, especially for its painted woods, which contribute to its fame. Painted frescoes, medieval decorations, plant and bestiary decorations from the Middle Ages make this church in the southern Gothic style one of the most beautiful in the Carcassonne area. Then pass through the Place de l'Abreuvoir to see its old-fashioned granite water trough, discover the remains of the two mills, and head for the "Espace Pierre Sèche": an inseparable part of Aragon's history, this open-air interpretation museum will plunge you into the heart of local traditions by allowing you to discover the techniques of dry stone construction. Continue your visit of Aragon by going to the splendid Jardin du Curé ("Hort dal Ritou"): overlooking the church square, this magnificent south-facing garden displays a whole range of flowers, each more beautiful than the next, colourful and fragrant: arbutus trees, lilacs, silver lime trees, olive trees, laurels, irises... You will also find there a good number of aromatic plants for medicinal use for the most part, cultivated since the Middle Ages, such as thyme, lavender, rosemary, sage or verbena.
After visiting the city and its surroundings, climb on your bike or put on your hiking boots to discover Aragon's main attraction: its generous and beautifully preserved nature. Through the Cabardès vineyard and the garrigue, lovers of outings to the countryside will be served! Several signposted routes criss-cross the town, such as the "Pierre sèche et garrigue" hike (7 kilometres), the "Le Vallon de la Valette" hike (4.5 kilometres) or the 15 kilometre "À travers la garrigue" loop, highly recommended if you like mountain bike expeditions. The Cathar Country is also famous for its hiking trails through the Black Mountain, routes that will allow you to see some of the most magnificent panoramas of the entire Aragon sector.
Finally, while passing through Aragon, take the opportunity to visit the breathtaking Carcassonne, only fifteen minutes away. Its Medieval City, its Bastide Saint-Louis, its banks of the Canal du Midi, its Château Comtal and its small addresses where you can taste the best cassoulets will be the icing on the cake of your holidays in the Aude.
