Watered by the Canal du Midi and the Aude, Homps is a choice destination for holidays to discover the pretty villages of southern France. This charming port, bordered by the Jouarres lake, is a real invitation to relaxation, far from the hustle and bustle of crowded seaside resorts.
Famous for its ideal location, the medieval town of Homps lives to the rhythm of the water. Embark for a whole day of discovery, at the slow pace of the waves of the Canal du Midi : "slow" is indeed the right word, because the speed is limited to 8 km/h, which will give you the opportunity to fully enjoy the landscapes that will be available to you during this cruise. If you don't have a boat licence, don't panic, you will still be able to sail aboard a "boat without a licence", after a few minutes of initiation at the helm. You will pass under bridges, tunnels, and near locks that make the fame and uniqueness of this world famous canal. Designed in the 17th century, the Canal du Midi extends over nearly 240 kilometres, from Toulouse to the Thau pond. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this fantastic site will give you the opportunity to discover all the singularity of the Aude landscapes : Castelnaudary and its cassoulet, Carcassonne and its fortified city, Ventenac-en-Minervois and its castle... So many things that you will have the opportunity to contemplate during your stay along the water.
Take a walk around the Jouarres pleasure lake. Spreading over more than 110 hectares, this vast body of water is a real bubble of freshness in this region so prone to crushing heat. You can of course swim there, but also learn water sports such as kayaking, paddle, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Its beach and shady pine forest make it an ideal place to relax, ideal for afternoons with family or friends. Take a pedal boat or a boat tour around the lake, and after a few life-saving dives into the gentle water of the lake, let yourself go for long moments of idleness under the audois sun. Inflatable playgrounds are also installed at the edge of the lake for young and old, and fishing fans will be able to enjoy themselves, since the lake of Jouarres is famous to swarm with carps. The lake's surroundings are arranged for walking or cycling, so that you can easily reach the centre of Homps and its harbour in a few minutes.
Hiking enthusiasts will not miss the many itineraries along the Montagne Noire, some forty kilometres from downtown Homps. This wild mountain range with its waterfalls and sumptuous lakes will delight walkers.
Finally, since it is nestled in the heart of a wine-growing region, the commune of Homps inevitably invites you to taste local wines. Don't miss the visit of the Chai, an essential place in Homps for those who wish to taste the best Minervois wine. Numerous grocery stores along the canal will allow you to shop before your boat cruises, and the village restaurants will allow you to taste local products, such as fricandeau, snails à la languedocienne, goat cheese, black truffles, olives, walnuts and pigs from the Montagne Noire to taste without moderation !

The city of Carcassonne is a must! The historical heart of Narbonne also (in addition we appreciate the freshness in the old walls). The superb village of Minerva is to be visited at all costs and, on the same route of the Black Mountain: the giant chasm of Cabrespine, unique in Europe. The Olonzac market in the nearby town of Homps, every Tuesday, is huge and very well stocked with all products (lots of clothes and local fruits and vegetables).
