Just south of Carcassonne, in the Occitan region, Preixan is perched on its sunny hillside overlooking the Aude at an altitude of 340 metres. The Aude, which waters the village from north to south, has made it a fertile place where viticulture has been made possible thanks to an ideal geographical location. For centuries now, the cultivation of vines has been the lifeblood of the inhabitants of Preixan, and delights the taste buds of gourmets. A renowned wine-growing area, it now has the AOP Malepère appellation and produces delicious Languedoc wines that are enjoyed with some of the most emblematic dishes of the local gastronomy such as cassoulet, fougasse with chips, or snails à la languedocienne.

These sunny valleys, in addition to producing an abundance of wine, were also famous for growing cereals and olives. Once upon a time, a proud fortified castle stood at the top of the Preixan hill, with a pile of houses around it, which 12 centuries later are still there, although the castle was destroyed to make way for a church, the church of Saint-Jean, built in a very elegant neo-gothic style. Also, take the time to visit the village built on a circular plan, to discover its beautiful residences as well as its Oppidum de Lagaste located at the exit of the village.

Staying in Preixan is also an opportunity to conquer the Cathar country and its legendary castles. The most famous of them? That of Carcassonne. Leader of the Cathar defensive line, the defensive arsenal of the City of Carcassonne has a total of 52 towers, two large enclosures and more than 3 kilometres of ramparts accessible by day and night. Built in the 12th century, the county castle of this medieval city rich in fascinating history is definitely a must to do during your stay. The Saint-Nazaire basilica, the imposing Porte Narbonnaise, the Porte d'Aude, the Tour des Lices and the numerous restaurants of Carcassonne make it a must to visit. But other castles in the area are also worth a visit, such as the magical Château de Quéribus perched at an altitude of 728 metres overlooking the village of Cucugnan 80 kilometres away (whose priest inspired the famous story of Alphonse Daudet), or the Château de Termes, that of Villerouge-Termenès, those of Arques, Leuc, and the Four Castles of Lastours (28 kilometres further north). The numerous walking and cycling routes that dot Preixan and its region will allow you to enjoy beautiful walks, especially on the Aude side where holidaymakers love to swim in the summer, but also along the Canal du Midi which passes through the Douceau lock in Carcassonne, and via the signposted paths which cross the region and which will lead you towards the Limousis Cave, the wonderful abbey of Saint-Hilaire, Carcassonne, Limoux, Castelnaudary, or Narbonne and its beaches located only fifty minutes drive from Preixan!
