On the Normandy coast, in the department of Calvados, Port-en-Bessin-Huppain has inspired authors, photographers and painters for centuries with its beauty and light. A historical, sporting and exotic destination, Port-en-Bessin-Huppain is an ideal holiday destination for a rejuvenating stay.
Halfway between Arromanches and Grandcamp-Maisy, between two high cliffs in the heart of the D-Day landing beaches, Port-en-Bessin-Huppain is one of those beaches that have counted in history: located between Omaha Beach and Gold Beach, this small port was in 1944 stuck between two famous landing zones. A strategic area, the village provided supplies to Allied fighters on the coast through its oil port until July 1944. From this past, the municipality has preserved some brands, such as casemates and the Museum of Underwater Wrecks of the D-Day Landings. Nowadays, Port-en-Bessin-Huppain is the first artisanal fishing port in Calvados: sea bream, dogfish, skate, sole and dry fish are fished there. But the port is above all known for its gourmet speciality: the scallop shell of the bay of the Seine. It is celebrated in November, during the "Festival of scallops and seafood" (called "Goût du Large"), the opportunity for visitors and Portais to share a warm moment around these iodized and tasty dishes.
To enjoy its friendly atmosphere, there is nothing better than a walk along the Baron Gérard quay and the Philippe Oblet quay, to contemplate from one of the many terraces that dot the port the panorama of the latter opening onto the sea. Comfortably seated, you will be amazed by the poetic ballet of the boats that come and go throughout the day. Visit the fishing port, the shipyard, the auction halls, the semaphore and follow the path of the painters who, like Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, were inspired by the town for their paintings. If there is one unmissable site in Port-en-Bessin, it is certainly its Vauban Tower: overlooking the port, this artillery tower built in 1694 was once used as a rampart against invasions and protected the city with its large guns. Subsequently converted into a powder magazine, this stocky tower has been classified as a Historical Monument since 1948.
With its kilometres of serrated coastlines and walking trails (especially towards Longues-sur-Mer), Port-en-Bessin-Huppain is a true haven of peace for lovers of the sea. Beaches are not really the main asset of the village, although you will still have the opportunity to enjoy moments of calm on the pebble cove at the foot of the Vauban Tower. To find long beaches of fine sand, you will have to go to the nearby beaches of Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, Longues-sur-Mer, Colleville-sur-Mer (Omaha Beach) and Vierville-sur-Mer.
Finally, on the activity side, you can opt for sail tank sessions, an introduction to sailing, a catamaran course or a kayak trip. The Omaha Beach Golf Club will delight golf fans, with its two 18-hole courses facing the sea.
