Whether it is called a City of Art and History, a spa or a museum city, Rochefort invites you to discover its many faces. Located a few kilometres off the coast of Charente-Maritime, less than 30 minutes from La Rochelle, Île d'Oléron, Île d'Aix and Île Madame, this royal town in the Pays de Fort Boyard is rich in a very beautiful historical, natural and architectural heritage. Built under Louis XIV, Rochefort is an exciting and surprising historical city, rich in many sites to visit. Built by Colbert, the Rochefort Arsenal is a landmark in French maritime history: to visit it, you will first have to pass under the magnificent gate of the Sun, in the shape of an arch of triumph. As you cross it, you will be able to discover the Corderie Royale, the avant-garde and the king's house. The Corderie Royale is one of the highlights of your visit: stretching over nearly 730 metres, it is still one of the most important buildings in Rochefort, which now houses the Centre International de la Mer. You can visit it, as well as the Musée de la Marine, which houses the exact replica of the Hermione, the famous French warship born in Rochefort itself: during this fascinating visit, a real dive into the heart of history, you will discover the slightest secrets of the one who played a major role in America's war of independence, with the Marquis de Lafayette aboard.
Apart from its arsenal, the city of Rochefort has other very beautiful historical sites, such as the Signal Tower, the former neoclassical water tower, or the remains of ancient fortifications on the Roy-Bry River. Place Colbert is a place to stroll around, with its beautiful neoclassical residences and rich private mansions adorned with rocky balconies. To continue your walk, we advise you to go to 141 rue Pierre Loti, to discover one of the region's treasures: Maison Pierre Loti. Richly decorated by this writer, sailor and traveller, this house is a true work of art, featuring magnificent and beautifully decorated rooms, including a breathtaking mosque whose ceiling had been directly brought back from Damascus by Pierre Loti during his travels. The library of the former medical school, the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire Hèbre de Saint-Clément, as well as the Musée des Commerces d'autrefois and the Jardins des Retours are also worth a visit. To make sure you don't miss anything in Rochefort, the "Chemin de la Charente" will allow you to see the city's most beautiful sites in less than 10 kilometres, from the Pont-Neuf to the Corderie Royale.
On foot, by bike, by kayak or by boat, there are many ideas for excursions in Rochefort, whether you are staying for a romantic, family or friends' holiday. Along the Charente River, you will cross the path of the Transborder Bridge, known to appear in Jacques Demy's cult film "Les Demoiselles de Rochefort", but also many sites and monuments that cross the river such as the Suspended Bridge, or Fort Lupin.
It is impossible to stay in Rochefort without learning about the pleasures of water sports! On the agenda? Canoe lessons, sailboat rides towards the sublime and preserved Île Madame, paddle, boat cruises and kayak excursions towards the famous Fort Boyard, catamaran on the Île d'Aix side... You will have a wide choice! A short distance from Rochefort, the Island of Aix is one of the highlights of your holiday: a real pearl of the Charente estuary, off the coast of Fouras-les-Bains, this preserved island can be visited on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage. Renowned for its 360° panoramas on the sea, this small island rich in history (fortified village, museums...) has some very beautiful beaches where you can indulge in long periods of idleness.
Finally, 6th thermal spa in France, Rochefort is famous for its warm and mineralized thermal waters. And every year, nearly 18,000 people come to Rochefortaise to enjoy the legendary benefits of the resort's waters and take a wellness break.
