In Charente-Maritime, at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, Royan will surprise you with the diversity of its assets. Between ocean, beaches, unique architecture, numerous leisure activities and local flavours, the capital of the Côte de Beauté offers you a thousand and one ways to recharge your batteries and have fun.
With its five fine sandy beaches, Royan offers you a different atmosphere almost every day of the week. The main beach, the Grande Conche, stretches over 2.5 kilometres and offers you the opportunity to swim in the very heart of the city. To practice surfing, go to Pontaillac beach, famous for its spot, and if you want more privacy, choose those of Chay, Focillon or Pigeonnier. Sportive, the resort will also allow you to devote yourself or to initiate you to many nautical activities : sailing, bodysurf, paddle, sand yacht, kitesurf, jet quad, jet ski, diving and even excursions at sea to fish or to make the big tour of the estuary.
Strongly affected by the bombings at the end of the Second World War, Royan lost the great majority of its historical heritage. Nevertheless some monuments survived this tragedy and deserve special attention as the castle of Mons, the dwelling of Belmont or the church Saint-Pierre, built from the XIth century. In the districts of the Park and Pontillac, you can also admire numerous Belle Époque villas, remarkable illustrations of seaside architecture. Some reconstruction buildings have also become emblematic, such as Notre-Dame Cathedral, built in raw concrete and classified among the masterpieces of modern architecture.
After this visit of the resort, treat yourself to a few moments of relaxation in one of Royan's thalassotherapy centres. If you prefer to do a little sport, you'll be spoilt for choice : tennis, golf, squash, horseback riding, karting... Also please your children by taking them to the Coolongalook adventure park or to Planet Exotica, a superb botanical and zoological garden. In the vicinity of Royan, make some escapades to go to see the Louvois fort, the Romanesque church Sainte-Radegonde of Talmont-sur-Gironde, the nature pole of Saint-Georges de Didonne, true small corner of paradise... And also take the time to taste the regional products : Marennes-Oléron oysters, croutons, mouclade, éclade, civelles, without forgetting the famous pineau des Charentes.

Lots of beaches along the coast. On the way between Sainte Palais sur Mer and Palmyre...After the beach La Grand Côte, there is a nudist beach: you can park on the right or on the left (parking les Combots) or parking plage Lede naturiste.

I know Royan well, and there are so many things to see around, difficult to mention them all, Mornac, Le phare de Cordouan, Talmont, the archaeological site of Le Fà, the éclades to taste in Marennes or Mornac, a gourmet meal at Les Basses Amarres (Mornac - recommended), Meschers, and all the charming Romanesque churches in the region more magnificent one than the other... Pontaillac, its beach and casino, the Côte Sauvage, the zoo of La Palmyre,... etc... etc... etc...

The Lopez glacier is excellent and cheap. The beach is pleasant. On the other hand I recommend the car for races at the Super U, the distance by foot is possible but if you have weight to carry, take your car!
